WVU fan here... Will Grier question

As far as his suspension, I am already aware of his off-field issue.

But, is there anything you can share about how he's performed as a QB for you all? Very curious how he'll do as a potential starter in both OOC play, as well as the Big 12 conference slate. He'll obviously be sitting out this coming season... but there will be a battle for the starting QB job in 2017 with Chris Chugunov, after Skyler Howard graduates next year.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated...

He has the infamous 'potential' to be a very good QB.

However, it's so long before he can play in an actual game that nobody knows where he might be by then...

He looks like someone that would play at West Virginia.....if that helps......wiry, scruffy, white boys from the woods.....

I think he's pretty legit. He'll throw for a million yards for Holgerson, but WVU will still probably lose its 5-6 games/year.

Holgerson & Muschamp should get together and co-coach a team. Holgerson handles the offense, Muschamp the defense.

Grier and Holgorson will be able to party together. I'll be surprised if Holgorson will even be Grier's coach by the time he's eligible.

Let's see...a kid with a substance abuse problem goes to play for a coach with a substance abuse problem. What could go wrong?
This and a coach that I don't think will be at West Virginia much longer. He's had 4 poor years in a row at West Virginia and is already on the hot seat. There were rumors he was going to get fired after this past season.

Liking some of the "Tongue in Cheek" comments. Liking the humor...

But on the serious side of this discussion...

As far as Holgorsen and his future at WVU...

Shane Lyons (most of you SEC folks may know him as former associate AD with Alabama), and is the AD for WVU. Lyons and Holgorsen apparently had meetings off and on since January. From what most of us are getting is there is a possible crossroads situation brewing. After reading some of the WV media news articles published earlier this year one of two events might be around the corner but nothing solid in alluding to whichever one.

Scenario #1. IF Holgorsen's squad doesn't get anything better than the constant 7-5 or worse regular season record, he will be gone by the end of the season/post bowl (depending on what results come out at the end of the season).

Scenario #2. This scenario may hinge on what results out of scenario #1. My guess is if we get to a bowl, what bowl that might be and IF we win it. There is still nothing out there publicly about an agreement on a contract extension between both parties. This might mean Shane Lyons and WVU President Gordon Gee may have told him in additional private meetings that regardless of what happens, his services will no longer be needed after his contract is up in 2017.

So what PacoGator has been saying has some validity to it. Just nothing solid at this point and as next season progresses, we'll get a better picture of Holgorsen's future.

Will Grier helped Florida get off to a 6-0 start and a 3-0 conference record before being suspended for the LSU game. His best games were against Tennessee (a come from behind 4th qtr win) and against top 10 Ole Miss (4 first quarter TD's.) who had defeated national champ Alabama a week before. He was suspended for the Florida-LSU showdown which the Gators lost narrowly on the road - a fake FG trick play helped Les Miles beat the gators again.

Last year, Florida (10-4, 7-1) relied upon a top 10/20 defense and a 1000+ yard runner for their wins and just needed a game-manager type at quarterback. I thought Grier protected the ball well, has a quick release and throws the pass early to the receivers where they can make a play afterwards. I think Grier throws an accurate deep ball, too. Florida had a weak offensive line and this is where Grier was a little shakey. Grier looks awkward when the pass protection breaks down. He can scramble for yards but is not always durable if he gets hit (see the Missouri game).

Had he stayed at UF, Grier could have played at Florida by the 7th-game this season but his QB position would be in question by then. Grier would have faced stiff competition for the open QB position starting in the Spring from veteran transfers Luke Del Rio (local kid from Jax), Ryan Appleby (from Purdue) and true freshmen Kyle Trask and Felipe Franks. I think Grier may have been ineligible for both the Spring and the Summer practices. That PED suspension handed down by the NCAA was very severe and damaging to Will Grier's college career.

Next season, one of the four guys above will start for Florida and another would be the back-up. There was no way that Coach McElwain would have just handed the starting QB position to Grier after the season had already started. The only way Grier would have had a chance to compete at UF next season is if there were injuries at QB or ineffectiveness at QB. This is entirely possible because of Florida's young offensive line and pass protection becomes an issue.

Had Grier stayed at Florida, he would have had 2.5 years to compete in college. At his new school, it may have been only 1.5 years. So, what would have been the best decision by Will Grier? Stay or transfer? Who knows.

There is thought that even if Grier transferred to a new school like West Virginia, he would have to still sit out seven games at his new school after he becomes eligible even after the one-year sitting out during the transfer. The NCAA may not allow Grier to escape NCAA punishment even after transferring and sitting out the year. This is why many Florida fans have an ambivalent attitude for Will Grier even after his heroics and promising start at Florida. It comes down to Grier's judgment - how hard can it be to ask a Florida trainer if what he eats/drinks is all right with the rules? Also, when Grier got suspended last year, he went away from his team and became an on-line student to get away from the pressure. Instead of supporting the back-up quarterback, Treon Harris, and the team, Grier chose to leave the team.

This account sounds like what most schools (including WVU) have had throughout their history with promising players in their major sports programs, but fizzle out from bad decisions. My hope is that he's learned from being on suspension and will excel with another opportunity. Otherwise he'll lose out at WVU too if he didn't learn from the previous event.

And let's be real, the only reason Grier wouldn't start the moment he was eligible is because of appearances. I'm sure some would have been upset he became the starter again right after his suspension. And that's exactly what would have happened because Del Rio or Appleby are just not in his league.

Personally, I would have been all for handing him the job the second his suspension was up and even telling him that. But I can respect Mac telling him to hit the bricks, if it's true that his dad was trying to dictate events.

If Holgerson does survive there, it's a great spot for Grier. Most WVU qbs' stats are going to be discounted by scouts. But Grier's will look legit, because of his recruiting profile and his success as a frosh with the Gators. Throw in his athleticism, and he could come out of there a very high pick.

Grier is a talerted player but you just can't hand him the starting QB job the minute he's eligible to play. That would not send a good message to all the other players on the team. I don't know how you could respect a coach as a player if he did something like that.

Right. And that's why it wasn't a possibility. I'm just saying he would have earned the job back anyway when looking at his competition. All that assuming he continued to light it up in practice. Players aren't dumb, they put feelings aside to win.

It was all said last year that Del Rio looked liked the best QB on the team last year. Del Rio may have something to do with this decision as well.

Del Rio looked pretty nice throwing the ball today...we'll see what kind of player he is this year but he seems to be 'the guy' so far. Biggest question is always the OLine...if the O Line plays well then that can take care of a lot of issues.

Mc would never just hand any player a starting position,,,, unless of course Jac & Lil-Bill got together and told him to.... -- -- :D:D:D --

I sure would have liked to see what would have happened if Trask had been given 4 series with the 1st team offense going against the 2-3 defense like Luke got. And also seeing Luke behind the 2-3 offense going against the first team defense. Then we could all have a little better idea about the relative quality of those 2 QB's. :)

Even Franks could drive the team and score when they gave him that kind of opportunity at the end of the game.... o_O

Isn't Franks the one you claimed would be the starter for the season, but you laughed at Georgia potentially starting Eason, as a true freshman? Interesting

Ah, yet another troll/stalker looking to take his smackin from ole insta. o_O

Nope moe-ron, I have advocated Trask all along after watching his Hudi HS film, but I'm totally willing to go along with Mc-Nuss's choice, (not that I have any say in the matter anyway).
May the best QB win come fall practice, but I'd be slightly shocked if Franks doesn't get a redshirt.

But do feel free to show me (link) where I claimed that Franks would be the 2016 starter.
I think that Eason is probably better (or more Fr ready) than Franks, but then that's not saying all that much imo.

However, I wouldn't trade Trask for either one of them, and I'm happy that Eason stayed with his leghumper commit.
