Considering Gary Patterson had 12-1, 11-2, and 11-3 seasons at a tiny metropolitan private school that has less than 11,000 students and high academic standards you used a bad comparaion. If a coach (Jerry Franklin for example) won 6-8 games at Vanderbilt many of you would be pissing your pants about how great he is. Patterson has earned himself a salary over 5 mil a year. He has turned down jobs in the past and has claimed no interest before being approached with other openings.Probably because Utah has came crashing down to earth since joining a real conference. One reason the TCU guy also doesn't get mentioned nearly as much as he used to when a big job comes open.

As for Kyle W, while in the PAC-12 he has survived at Utah longer than coaches at USC, UCLA, Arizona State, and Oregon. For a school in a state with not a huge recruiting base, and surrounded by bordering states in the second situation...I wouldn't say he "crashed down to earth" as you put it.
It's rare when a non P5 is expanded into a P5 they immediately become a Conference powerhouse. Both Utah and TCU contend in their conference against the established programs.
So playing in a conference championship you are fairly new in like Utah just did is a crash down to earth? Winning part of the conference you are new in like TCU has done is a crash down to earth? Great logic.I think I made a real good point. These schools reeling off these undefeated and one loss seasons because they only played good teams a few times a year have found out what it is like in a real conference where you get a much more demanding slate over your whole season. TCU and Utah both came down to earth after a few seasons of dealing with that.
