Makes sense....at least a running QB organically make the offense more imaginative. Pretty sad I actually typed that though
A running QB would certainly help out the right side of our line. Can't see how this is not going to kill us the entire season unless some of our younger OL get to play (and are better) or we scheme around it with a mobile QB.
How this could get better: Start DJ this week. Open up the play book with some zone read, some designed QB runs and let the kid throw it 40 times. Throw the ball all over including to the wide side of the field in some 1v1 matchups and give our guys a chance to make a play.
How this could get worse: Mertz gets cleared and they think they need to start him to work on the "execution" of the O for the big games coming up.
How this gets even worse: They start Mertz and decide to run the ball 40-50 times to work on the running game.

Would you say we shouldn’t make the change from Trask to Franks after the Kentucky game if say franks didn’t have the season ending injury? I would have and it clearly would have been the best choice. Same could be said here if he gets it rolling this game despite the pitiful opponent
The idea that DJ is a savior requires the belief that this staff has brilliantly coached up a true freshman to perform beyond his years.....ain't happening. I get it that the backup QB is the most popular guy on the team, but you guys are expecting way too much imo. Reminds of me AR and Mullen a few years ago when AR started against UGA. DJ was 3-6 with a pick against Miami in garbage time. He's a great talent, but he's not going to save the program. Our problems are bigger than who plays QB.
I would bet on it. That would be a recipe for running DJ off.
When mertz is healthy he will be the starter. These stubborn coaches are all the same. He will ram his head into a wall until we fire him . Accept this
The pick was a fluke (and luck). If not mistaken, DJ's arm was hit as he released the ball and it came floating down to a defender lying flat on his back. Miami never let up. They wanted to embarass us (and they did). Wasn't their starters still in the game? DJ would have won the Orange and Blue game against Mertz but Billy didn't want that to happen.
Not the same scenario. Franks struggled early on, got better for a season, then showed signs of regressing again before the injury. Franks' recovery took a couple of months, by then Trask had solidified the position. Graham played well last year and will be back by A&M. I don't care how well DJ plays against Samford, you can't bench Mertz based on that one game.
If Mertz struggles against A&M and DJ comes in and saves the day (ala Franks/Trask vs Kentucky) then we have a QB controversy.
He held onto the ball too long on an RPO. The run blocking OL pulled and allowed free rushers. He has to get rid of the ball faster by the play design. That's a lack of experience.
I like DJ a lot, but Mertz did a lot of good things last year. That shouldn't be erased because of one game.
I have always lived by the notion of never over reacting to one single game, especially the first game of the year.
This game might have been the exception.
That being said......lets see what happens the next few weeks. Its not impossible that things look better. We will see if the kids want to play for Billy or not.

If Billy wins 6 games from where we are today it would be one hell of a coaching job.
I suspect he won't win more than 3 or 4. November could be "epically ugly".
Yes. Perhaps interim coach Ron Roberts gets the win over FSU.
That reminds me; Greg Knox has more wins over FSU than Billy Napier.

Mertz does nothing for us going into the future. The results of this season are going to be ugly. Let DJ take the reigns.
I agree however I think they need to trim the playbook for DJ. Don't overload him with the entire playbook. Let's see what he brings to the table. If Mertz starts the rest of the season and Napier is fired I wonder where Lagway will be playing next year? LSU? How much do you think Kirby would pay DJ to transfer to Georgia?
Mertz just isn’t an accurate passer downfield over 10 yards. I think this is why Billy likes him so much is his offense isn’t explosive and wants the 5-7 yard throws and the controlled passing game. I think Mertz is a great kid but if you watch the breakdown, he was awful in that game
I have to disagree on this one. I think Lagway should start Saturday and if he plays well he remains the starter. Is this a bold move? Kind of, but remember this was the # 1 dual threat HS QB in the country. Think back about 7 years. Alabama is losing 13-0 against Georgia for the National Championship. Saban benches Jalen Hurts and starts Tua (a HS 4* from Hawaii) in the second half. Jalen Hurts had a great year, undefeated, and I think everyone recognizes Hurts is a great QB, Replacing him with a true freshman trailing 13-0 in the NC took giant cajones but Saban must have figured he had nothing to lose (Tua had some experience in mop up roles in blowouts). The next year Tua was starting and Hurts was the backup.
Is starting Lagway a bigger risk than replacing Hurts? Not even close. Give him the keys to the O and let him be D J Lagway. What do the Gators have to lose?
I’m kinda torn on this. On one hand I’d love to let the kid show us what he’s got. On the other, I’d rather not know how great he is since he’ll likely bail to another team.
Perhaps. What if Mertz only shows success with check downs and is horrible downfield? At least play Lagway. He might surprise us all. And the same goes for Lagway's performance from such a small sample. Mertz sample was much bigger than Lagway's. Mertz has not proven himself to be very good vertically.

According to the Miami DC, we only run about 5-7 plays consistently anyway so that shouldn't be too hard to learn.
Also agree. DJ is honestly Napier's only hope to keep his job. We've all seen Mertz and while he's steady, save last Saturday, he's just a guy. He's not going to help a bad team maybe win 7 games but Lagway, if he's as good as we hope and continues improving, could be that guy. That's a simple solution but I doubt Billy will go that route.
