The deputy who gave Brown a ride home responded to the 911 call, shooting Brown as he stood in the road while talking on the phone with the 911 dispatcher.

“I’m still trying to figure out where he felt the threat at to feel the need to shoot,” Brown’s sister, Yolanda Brown, told News4 Thursday.

After the video was released, the family attorney for Brown released a statement, saying, "Isaiah clearly told dispatch that he did not have a weapon more than 90 seconds before the deputy arrived ... The deputy was situated nearly 50 feet from Isaiah, was never threatened and should not have discharged his weapon."

“At my request, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was contacted to ensure an impartial investigation,” Spotsylvania Sheriff Roger Harris said.

Crazy case here and the bodycam video doesn't really show hardly anything. My guess is this cop was really on edge after being told this guy was saying he had a gun and might shoot his brother. Then you have the guy probably on drugs not responding to the officer hollering to drop the gun. Hard to say not being there but you would think the cop should be able to tell if he was holding a smart phone up to his head but adrenaline probably affected that also.

This sounds like a bad one.

I think this was about the craziest cop shooting I have seen. Happened some years back and the cop unloads on the guy for reaching into his vehicle right after the cop tells him he needs his license etc.

The cop also wrote lies in his report like it was just the guy possibly reaching for a gun without being asked to get that stuff. The video capturing the audio got him fired and thrown in prison for a while I think.

You never know what the deputy was thinking, he may have felt like he was in danger and the phone appeared to be a firearm in the darkness. Drop the object and hands up should have been the protocol.

Worst thing I’ve ever seen.

That’s all the cops fault! 100%. He asked for his drivers license and he went for it. Can’t blame the guy. If he was white we wouldn’t even hear about this which is messed up. His race had nothing to do with the cops actions.

I don't see a threat there but we'll see what happens.

Definitely seems like LEO making really bad decisions. WHY? Bad training? Maybe. Racism? Maybe.

If I had to hazard a guess, bad training.

Maybe he had taken good training classes but he certainly didn't get anything out of them...or maybe he just didn't have it, period.

He gave a command without considering the consequences of his command. The man he shot was in a lose-lose proposition.

I've seen an officer order a man to drop a knife and then order the man to kneel in the same spot where the knife was dropped. Kneeling in that spot would have put the man closer to the knife that he had just dropped which would have put the officers and the man in more danger.

Luckily his Sargeant overruled the command and took over the scene and it ended peacefully.

Even with training, you have to practice and live out scenarios before they happen. There are endless scenarios to prepare for but far fewer positive end results. You train your mind to search for the best end result. To do that, you have to be able to think under pressure.

Not everyone can do that. The guy in that video did not.
