1) I 100% agree with Texas standing up for a tradition that you have to tie yourself into a pretzel to make racist. It doesn't have "Confederate Roots". Robert E. Lee used to say "the eyes of the South are upon you" to his students as a university president at another school...and the fact the song was first heard at a mistral show is just because it was 1930-whatever and racist mistral shows still existed then...I think this whole thing is crazy and I wouldn't piss on Texas if they were on fire.
2) Most of the emails from boosters were fine, and made good points
3) There are a few that typed their emails struggling to see through white hoods...these emails are not helpful for the cause they support:
I mean, who talks like this in 2021?
"It's time for you to put the foot down and make it perfectly clear that the heritage of Texas will not be lost," wrote another donor who graduated in 1986. Their name was also redacted by UT-Austin. "It is sad that it is offending
the blacks. As I said before
the blacks are free and it's time for them to move on to another state where everything is in their favor."
And I don't even know what to highlight in this email, it's insane
"Less than 6% of our current student body is black," wrote Larry Wilkinson
, a donor who graduated in 1970, quoting a statistic UT-Austin officials have stated they’re working to improve. "The tail cannot be allowed to wag the dog….. and the dog must instead stand up for what is right. Nothing forces those students to attend UT Austin. Encourage them to select an alternate school ….NOW!"
Emails obtained by The Texas Tribune show alumni and donors threatened to stop supporting the university financially and demanded that the university president take a stronger stance supporting "The Eyes of Texas."
