Florida and Miami are close to reaching an agreement to play each other in football in Orlando in 2019, but as far as possibly renewing the rivalry on a regular basis, there is no plan in the works, UF athletic director Jeremy Foley said Wednesday.
“We’re still looking on that game in Orlando with Miami. There’s a very good chance it will happen, but that’s not final yet,” Foley said. “As far as renewing the rivalry, playing them every year, that’s not on the agenda.”
At an Accent speaking event on campus Tuesday night, UF coach Jim McElwain was asked by a student about the possibility of renewing the in-state rivalry with Miami. His response made it sound like it was only a matter of time before it happens.
“It’s something we’ve talked about,” he said. “There might be some things in the works and yet, I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag there at all. It’s definitely not one of those things that we’re dodging them, I’ll say that.”
McElwain and the Gators will not be playing the Hurricanes on a regular basis in the future, but the 2019 game in Orlando is close to becoming official.
“I’m confident it will happen,” Foley said. “We still have to dot some i’s and cross some t’s on that. Hopefully, we’ll know something in the next couple of months.”
The two schools last played a home-and-home series in 2008 and 2013.
With eight SEC games and Florida State already on the Gators’ schedule every season, UF has shown little interest in playing UM on a regular basis.
Florida opens the 2017 season Sept. 2 against Michigan in the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
