Tom Petty Dead at 66

No, not dead. At least not yet anyway.

LAPD changed their initial report from dead to hospitalized in critical condition. Prayers please.

I just recently saw a documentary about them and how they got it started in Gainesville, it opened with their concert in the O Dome in 06...

I watched that over the summer, on a lazy Sunday morning (I assume it was the same show); it was very well done.

For the most part, I've always reacted to celebrity deaths with a big "meh" - but this one stung. If my life were made into a movie, the great music of he & the Heartbreakers would be prominent on the soundtrack.

Relevant excerpt from a funny interview:

After dinner, we take a little constitutional around the grounds. Petty is a little unsteady on his feet these days – his right knee bows a bit, and he has a tendency to get excited when he's telling a story and start hopping around and stumble. "You've gotta work harder to stay fit," he says of getting older. "But I'm lucky because my job tends to keep me a bit younger than, say, people I knew from school. I'll run into them and be like, 'Whoa. Who's that old ****er?'  "

He's not much of a party animal; last night he fell asleep watching A Hard Day's Night in bed. He doesn't have many vices: He's never been a big drinker ("I didn't like the taste or the buzz, and I can't stand being around drunks") and he never really got into cocaine ("I mean, I went through the Eighties like everybody, but cocaine was never a good look"). "I'm mostly just a reefer guy," he says. "It's a musical drug." He laughs at the idea of a prescription, though. "I've had a pipeline of marijuana since 1967."

Petty is a history buff and a fan of Thomas Jefferson. He says one of his favorite things to do whenever he's in Washington, D.C., is to "wait until it's really late, get stoned, go to the Jefferson Memorial, and just sit there and read the walls. I've done that a few times."

Actually, Petty does have one other bad habit, and that's cigarettes. He's been smoking since he was 17, and though he's down to less than a pack a day, he doesn't even bother pretending he's trying to quit. "I'm an addict, man," he says. "I'm a sick ****. I don't light up in the car because people get upset. But I don't understand why I can't light up in a bar or park. I think that's yuppie shit."

R.I.P. 66 is still a pretty good run for a rock star.

Although our paths went through some of the same ole N.FL stompin' grounds, I never actually had the pleasure or privilege of meeting him. :(

I've been around a little longer already than Tom was, and I was a light smoker for much of it, but not so much anymore. I still have a massive tobacco pipe collection and I will still smoke the occasional high dollar stogie, but I put the pac-a-day cigs aside a few decades ago. IMO, the many aches and pains of growing old are God's way of encouraging us into the recycle bin, so I don't worry about dying. That, and I feel like I've pretty much been on borrowed time since the late 60's, early 1970's. Back then, I never expected to even reach the current century. In some cases back then, even tomorrow seemed to be a pretty long way off...o_O

I've also already survived my first massive coronary, even though the EMT's didn't think that I'd even make it to Shands alive, (me and you lord). ;)

Tom was always a top quality guy and a great musician imo, so he'll be missed by me, (and by many others). :(
Prayers out to his family and very sorry for their loss.
But 'Happy Trails' to Tom, until we meet again...

Oh lord, was the chronic that killed him not the cigarettes..

Smoking doubles your risk of basically everything.

Except for getting fat. Which is why smoking is fantastic. Nearly everyone I know, who still smokes, cites fear of being mistaken for Mark Mangino as a major factor in not ditching the Marlboros for good.

Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal.

Love leaves a memory that no on can steal.

I encourage everyone to read Warren Zanes' book called Petty: The Biography. Came out in 2015 and was written with the full cooperation of Tom, his family and the band. Excellent and informative read and brought back a lot of memories for me.

Well, I won't back down
No, I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down

No, I'll stand my ground, won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won't back down

(I won't back down)
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey, I will stand my ground and I won't back down
Well, I know what's right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I'll stand my ground and I won't back down

(I won't back down)
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey, I will stand my ground
(I won't back down)
And I won't back down

(I won't back down)
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey, I won't back down
(I won't back down)
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
(I won't back down)
Hey, I will stand my ground
(I won't back down)
And I won't back down
(I won't back down)
No, I won't back down

He was a heavy smoker most of his life.

Gainesville Green

Micanopy Madness

Melrose Mellow

Alachua Assault

Keystone Creeper

Newberry Knock-out

Just some random names I heard way back in the day.
I don't have a clue what they are about...

So after reading the thread this guy was a singer? Why do people care when singers and celebs die? I never understood that. Its not like u knew them or they knew u. Tons of people die everyday, that brings me down more than 1 celeb/singer. Peoppe are weird

He was from Gainesville but I doubt he spent much time there after he left...who could blame him.

It's because his songs made a lot of people feel better about things and created a lot of happiness. He was a welcome break from a world full of self-consumed morons like yourself. Now he's gone, but you're still here. It's depressing.

Why do people need to feel better about themselves? People are such losers. I hope to depress you for a LONG time

If you have to listen to the songs of an emaciated drug user to make you feel better then you obviously have a very shitty life...will you need to be on suicide watch? After yesterday my bet is yes. Now go to your room and listen to some Tom Petty and feel better buttercup.
