I agree with most TN fans here. In his 2nd year on the team and as their new starter they won based mostly on things other than his play. He certainly didn't look like one of the better QBs in college to me when I did watch them. Curious if any other team gives him more than TN was willing to give him. I think some of these NIL agents are going to end up screwing their clients. Not sure who else they have though.

I gained a lot of respect for Coach Heuple and his Vols by saying good-bye to this prima donna. I understand he cannot transfer to an SEC team when he hits the portal so we may have seen the last of him in the league.

A tip of the hat for the actions Tennessee took because you know other schools will be faced with this same problem in the future. A team cannot allow one player to dictate, especially one who skips practice. That should get anyone kicked off of the team.

The biggest joke is he played mediocre in about all their hardest games and he thinks that means he should get paid at the very top. I could care less if an SEC coach was dumb enough to pay him big money as far as them thinking it improves their team. Any coach that pays him 3+ million is an idiot in my book. Hopefully he ends up getting less than TN was going to give him to wake people up.

I certainly agree. He thought he was so big and so important that he could skip practice. Once he was a no show at practice, Tennessee took action and rightfully so. College teams cannot allow players to dictate or run the program.

If this sends a message to other schools and players it will be worth it. Here is what Pete Thamel has to say about it.

And with no other stats that point to possibly making a big jump his next season. He should have felt he won a lottery getting 4 million for the 2 years he has already been there and even being offered 2.4 million for this upcoming year.

A friend of mine that is a Tennessee fan said he was also an awful teammate and the front runners for his services are Oregon and USC since he cant come to the SEC.
Today’s landscape of college football is different from what it has been," Heupel said after the Volunteers' spring game on Saturday. "It’s unfortunate, just the situation and where we’re at with Nico. I want to thank him for everything he’s done since he’s gotten here — as a recruit to who he was as a player. And how he competed inside of the building. So we’re in appreciation for that side of it.”
“Obviously we’re moving forward as a program without him. I said it to the guys today — there’s no one that’s bigger than the Power T. And that includes me. And they hear me say that a lot inside of that team room. This program has been around for a long time with a lot of great coaches, lot of great players that came before that laid the cornerstone pieces, the legacy, the tradition that is Tennessee football is going to be around a long time after I’m done and after they’re gone. And that’s what’s special about being here is that there’s a legacy and a tradition that is so rich. Our logo that’s recognized not just across the nation, but across the world too. And today you got a chance to see 110 guys that ran out and competed their butts off and give their all for Tennessee and do it the right way and really proud of the spring that they’ve had and also how they’ve culminated it as well.”

Highly doubt Oregon will touch him. Rumor is Lanning let the TN coach know that he was fishing for teams and his agent or connection contacted them. Not sure USC's situation but this guy was so pedestrian last season against any team with a pulse I don't see that head coach paying him in the millions. It would be comical if somehow FSU ended up with him after DK Ugh this past season.

Here is his dad. We see what a part of the issue is. Sounds like he is more of an idiot than Rashada's dad.

It will be interesting to see where this goes. The dad is obviously an idiot. Supposedly Oregon and ND told them they have no interest and no other teams had made an offer to pay more than TN where they were going to give him 2.4 million this season despite his pedestrian play. If no NIL numbers get released when he lands somewhere his dad definitely screwed him out of some money.

Part of me says good for Tennessee for standing their ground (FTR - I am not against athletes getting as much as they can, just against this never ending free agency - if you agree to something, stand by it.).
The other part says that Tennessee got what they deserved. If you recall, it was the Tennessee AG that sued the NCAA (and won) to allow colleges to negotiate with athletes before they were on campus. That means that there were likely other colleges making Nico offers before he ever "held out".

Could be wrong but looking at his play last season what would make any team want to offer him more than 2.4 million. He looked like he did against us against any decent team. Very limited and they won with defense and their running game while he he looked liked crap any time they needed him to produce to have a chance. I think he could face plant as bad as DJ Ugh if he goes to a team that the QB has to carry the team.

Not disagreeing with your comments on his play, GF. But crazy money is being thrown around right now, so who knows what he got offered. Maybe he got an offer and over-played his handbwith TN. Also, Congress is debating a bill now that might reign in some of this, so maybe he is trying to cash in before that becomes law.

I doubt it but you could be right. I think his father screwed up just like the father of the UNLV QB demanding 100k that walked after their 3rd game in 2024. That kid is now at James Madison who probably only gives spending money NIL.

Imo the only team crazy enough to offer a QB that looked like that 2 million plus would be the one that already paid him a bunch hoping he was going to be a good one. I really hope we see what he gets at his next school but I would be shocked if it's more than TNs final offer was.

Congress Bill will make things crazier as schools can pay up to 20.5 million I think directly out of yearly revenue to player deals starting next season.

Rumors he is talking with UCLA, UNC and Tulane. If Tulane is really in there he is going to pay a price probably. UCLA I highly doubt would pay him near 2 million and Bill at UNC usually wants value in situations like this based on his NFL style. Their starting QB is rehabbing his leg still and was very limited in the spring I think.

Everything I read is UNC is the front runner

even if he gets more money out west he's gonna be losing money because of the cost of living out there + state tax

the people running his life just ruined it maybe forever with this greedy bullshit.. Because he's already an awful QB and should have been happy with the money he was already stealing.

I told everyone on this board that the open portal combined with NIL (the portal being the biggest villain) would be the death of CFB as we knew it. If players want to be paid, then by god, honor your contract or hit the NFL draft with no transfers.

It doesn’t matter if you yell Go Dawgs, War Eagle, Hook ‘Em, Go Irish, or Roll Tide…
No matter the colors you wear or the stadium you call home, every college football fan should be standing with Josh Heupel today.
Because this weekend, he didn’t just make a coaching decision — he made a stand.
A stand for what college football used to be, and what it still could be if enough of us care.
He stood up for crisp Saturday mornings in Knoxville, when you’re walking into a tailgate with your kids — full of pride, tradition, and orange everywhere you look.
He stood up for late Saturday nights under the lights in Neyland, with your best friends beside you, watching a game that feels bigger than life.
He stood up for the culture this sport has created — one built on loyalty, legacy, and love for something deeper than money.
Guys like Peyton Manning didn’t wear the Power T for a paycheck. Hendon Hooker didn’t stick around for a bidding war. They played for Tennessee — for what it meant.
And this isn’t a criticism of the player, but the system that allows & promotes this behavior. You were warned this was coming. That NIL would tilt the balance. That the game we love would start to lose its soul. And here we are — where the highest bidder can win, and jumping ship is just part of the process.
But this weekend, Josh Heupel said enough.
He drew the line. He chose Tennessee over transactions. Culture over contracts.
So whether you love Tennessee or love to beat them — respect the man who stood up for every fan who’s ever poured their heart into this game.
Thank you, Coach Heupel.
For standing tall.
For reminding us why we fell in love with this sport in the first place.
Roll Tide. Go Vols. Go College Football.
Because it used to be about more than just money. Faith. Family. Football. Show where you stand—get the shirt https://thealabamacrimsontide.com/.../save-college...

Not sure where it finally ends up but we are in the worst situation it can probably be in now with easy transfers and players evidently not locked into deals too tightly.

I think with the bill in Congress the SEC teams and Big 10 teams at least will be spending that whole 20.5 million a year or whatever the max number is that will be allowed to be used to pay players. A lot of big boosters were claiming they were going to reduce their funding of NIL and that this would fill in for some of that (we will see how much the big boosters at the top football schools really do that).

I think it's going to create some big headaches initially because in the SEC and Big 10 especially that 20.5 million or so is going to put the traditionally lower half SEC and Big 10 schools in play money wise despite them not having the big boosters funding a lot of NIL. Now those lower rung SEC and Big 10 schools can compete roster wise a lot easier if they are strategic with how they spend that 20.5 million.

FSU wishes they had that problem.

Kid and the people around him are fools. Making MILLIONS of dollars...you played a very average but well under expectations in your FIRST year of college. Now you're out and nobody is going to touch you. I could see holding out if he had a Johnny Manziel type freshman year but he was far from that. Had this kid and his crew had half a brain they would have said, "let's go out and have a killer year" then we'll renegotiate...just tells you how blind they are to what he has produced and what others think his potential is. Like Parcells used to say...potential is nothing, performance is everything.

Pretty much made a horrible business decision.
