Football Thoughts on this Florida team......

While I still don't think that they are smart enough to do it, I'm still hoping for Kerwin Bell as the Assist HC/OC....

Who is this person that would shock us? If it's an NFL guy now he would have to be willing to leave a better paid OC position there while doing a good job now. Hard to see a good NFL OC who is job safe doing that.

From what I have heard is he was in the NFL and has been on break.

Head coach Billy Napier needs that offensive coordinator. Even if Russ Callaway gets some playcalling duties next season, Napier would benefit, at least from an optics standpoint, if he brought in a co-offensive coordinator.

The Gators have the offensive talent. That wide receiver core has so much promise, while the running game by committee has already proven it can get the job done. Finding a system that truly maximizes these players would make the Gators lethal.

I know in the modern day that a Heisman quality quarterback is everything. But there's an old saying that can still ring true, and that's defense wins championships.

But the iG still thinks that it's a TEAM effort at all 3 levels that wins, offense, defense, and special teams.
IMOHO, Billy needs that OC so that he can concentrate on coordinating those 3 levels...

Above has us 7th in the SEC and this guy has us 9th in the SEC. I think we should be higher than that with our returning players and Lagway if Napier doesnt cost us many games. LSU is hard to peg but if those transfers click they could be pretty good. Bama and GA certainly aren't stacked like they were pre-NIL. Ole Miss could surprise and contend for a playoff spot again. That QB Simmons looked pretty good in his limited playing time against GA etc. and they are hitting the portal hard again.

They are ranked #2 in the transfer portal and they have brought in a lot of offensive weapons to replace the guys leaving

It will depend on Simmons. If he is the real deal they will probably be in that 8-4 to 10-2 area.

I think things would have to bounce right pretty good for them to make the playoff though.

I read somewhere today that our win total in Vegas for next year was set at 6.5.. if we win less than 9 games with Lagway and all the returning starters + additions of 5 star game breakers it would be a failure.. The last month of the season they already showed they can compete and beat the upper tier teams, all those players are a year older coming back and Lagway will only get better, we have 3 monster RB's to help him.. Significant parts of the OL coming back, defense should get better.. I really don't see why we shouldn't expect big next year schedule be damned, we have the roster to compete with top teams again. We just have a coach that could cost us 4 games

Yep even with our schedule that is low. I still would be scared to bet it just in case Lagway missed some games though. I agree less than 9 wins if Lagway plays the whole season is a failure.

What's happened with the huge hiring announcement we were supposed to be getting? Without a really good Offensive Coordinator, I just don't see the Gators becoming a true challenger for the SEC title.
No one actually believed Napier was hiring an OC did they

As many expected hard headed Napier wants to keep calling the plays I guess. Hopefully Lagway is enough to overcome that the next 2 seasons. We will be tested on it though since everyone knows you have to stop the deep passes against our offense now.

Forgoing an OC Hire: The Right or Wrong Move for Gators Billy Napier?

The Gators struggled to convert on third down.
The offense was No. 92 in the nation in this category.
They were only successfully converting on third down 37.9% of the time.
This goes hand in hand with them finishing 82nd in total first downs.
(iG - is this now the time to refer to this condition as 3rd and Nappy?)
🤓

(what many of us have been asking for years now??)
These numbers alone validate the need for an offensive playcalling upgrade.
By now, Napier should understand the difficulties of handling the playcalling responsibilities. He’s spreading his focus in too many directions, and it’s negatively impacting decisions on the field.

It isn’t just stats proving this either, use the eye test as well. How many times have they wasted a talented receiver by sending him on an orbit motion? How many times have the Gators got into a dangerous area and disrupted the momentum with a play call that made zero sense and cost them points?

If you want one example, look back at the FSU game from two years ago. After forcing a safety and holding all the marbles, he tried calling a trick play with a backup quarterback in his first collegiate season and it turned into a disaster (as some of you unfairly blamed this on Max Brown instead of on Nappy, where it belonged). Then, FSU gets the ball back and scores on the eve of halftime to swing the pendulum back their way. Additionally, the Gators would go on to lose this game.

The Gators might not have the same level of talent. But that doesn’t mean an OC can’t still maximize the talent at his disposal.

It's long past time for OC Kerwin Bell and/or his son Kade - iG
And if Nappy is unwilling to learn and change, then after next season he can and should be replaced with both HC Kerwin and OC Kade!

The Napier OC hiring was the same thing as the Bill gators meeting after after the Tennessee game. Just message boards jerking themselves off. I’m ok if Napier wants to call his own plays. He set all this up, he can run it how he wants. If it gets him fired, it gets him fired.

The bull Gator stuff wasn't nonsense though - they did pool the money up to buy Napier out but the reality was he wasn't being fired if we went 6-6 or better. The same reality probably is true if he goes 8-4 or better this season even if his in game decision making costs us a game or two.

Sounds like we are interviewing Jacksonville States DC for a position here. I am guessing he would be called the Co-DC but Roberts would still call the defense. Not sure what is going on with this though.

The nonsense was the rumor that they were meeting on the Sunday after the UT game and he was going to be fired Monday.

To me the OC thing was the same. People were saying he got an ultimatum to get an OC based on what? Doesn’t appear to have been the case.

Even with Sr's Dike & Badger leaving for the NFL Draft, Florida’s depth at
the position has improved compared to last season. (Ht/Wt as of July 2024)

WR J. Michael Sturdivant 6-3 205 rsSr
- xfer-in Cal/UCLA, 10.3 100M
Plagued with injuries throughout last season, still had 22 for 315 Yds, 2 TD's.
FWAA 1st Team Fr AA after leading all FBS Fr with 65 for 755 Yds.
Career - 123 for 1,667 Yds, 13.6 Ave, 13 TD's, L-62

WR Eugene Wilson 5-10 183 rsSo - injured out in 2024.
Fr AA and Fr All SEC
- 61 for 538 yds, 6 TD's.
Career - 80 for 804 Yds, 10.1 Ave, 7 TD's, L-85

WR Aidan Mizell 6-1.5 186 Jr
- Fastest 2023 timed player on roster.
Little use Fr, then backup for Dike/Badger as a Soph, 17 for 202 Yds, 2 TD's.
Mizell showcased his deep threat ability last season, finishing with multiple 40+ Yd TD's
despite receiving limited targets. (had a 65 Yd TD called back)
Career - 19 for 227 Yds, 11.9 Ave, 2 TD's, L-43

WR Tank Hawkins 5-9.5 176 So (slot)

Limited use backup but had 10 for 100 Yds, 1 TD, L-36 with ability to beat double coverage and
make the catch. In 2023, HS Sr Hawkins proved to be the fastest high schooler by winning
1st place in the 2023 Florida 60m Indoor State Championships. He's already a polished route runner.

#6 WR Vernell Brown III 5-11 170 Fr **** (legacy) another polished route runner that impacted the game in all three phases in HS.

WR's not in the article:

WR/QB Kahiell Jackson 6-3 215 rsSr-Grad - 2024 injured out (legacy)

I didn't read that story. Just remember the reports saying if he didn't win a few games after that he would be gone. I think even big booster Gary said he would be safe if he made it to 6-6.

I agree there was no real ultimatum to get an OC even if they were pushing it. Napier was safe once we beat LSU. I hope he doesn't screw us too much this season. With Lagway starting the whole season 9-3 should be the minimum but we know they won't fire him at 8-4.
