Tariffs

Trump begging for a deal at the outset, just like he did with the Ukraine cease fire. This is what I mean when I say he thinks he can just speak things into existence. He really thinks Putin or Xi are going to do an agreement because he says so. It’s in their interest to let Trump twist.

Of course he wants a deal, that’s been his stance from the start.

What did you think he was doing?

And he’s not speaking anything into existence, he’s asking China to come to the table through his press secretary. That’s called negotiating.

I honestly can't tell if he's trying to troll us, or trolling himself. I don't think he knows either.

Well we’re just BSing around here about if we have the leverage or if China does.

I think China does but I could be wrong.

Generally, between two negotiating parties, if you’ve got one that’s issuing public statements about how much they’re looking forward to getting a deal done, do you think that party has the leverage or not?

Do you see China putting out statements like that? Why not do you suppose?

My guess is we’ll sign a nothing trade agreement with China, just like we did in Trump’s first term, and business will continue as usual and you guys will all fall all over yourselves about Trump’s negotiating genius.

Just like the ceasefire talks in Ukraine. How’s the “art of the deal” playing out there?

Trump has been doing the same thing for weeks. Difference is, Trump built his coalition THEN raised tariffs on China. Xi tried to bully Trump, Trump bullied him back, now China is scrambling to get other world leaders to help him.

Guess he doesn't have the leverage he thought he did?
Who’s our coalition again?

Who’s our coalition again?
The 100 or so countries not named 'China' that are contacting Trump to cut a deal on tariffs?

See the difference? 100 countries coming to Trump wanting to work with him, while Xi is 'pounding the pavement' begging Spain for help LOL

Can you imagine what bradley would be saying if Trump was flying to Tel Aviv begging Bibi to side with him on tariffs? Or if 100 countries were coming to Xi wanting to work with China?

Watching you try to move the goalposts in real time is honestly LOL funny. So entertaining.

Trump has always done this with tyrants. He was nice to Kim Jong, he said nice things about Putin and he’s doing it now with Xi.

He understands these people rule by fear and intimidation and their public image is their power. Calling them out and being a dick does no good.

But it has nothing to do with who has the leverage.

This ends only one of two ways:

1 - We right the trade imbalance with China, greatly improve our position with most other countries, end up being in a much stronger and richer position. And Trump gets the credit.

2 - Trump's plan fails, we continue the slow march toward bankruptcy and all the problems that come with that. Trump gets the blame.

I honestly think most of Trump's critics here would be happy to see Trump's plan fail, and China be in a stronger position and the US be significantly weakened...as long as Trump got the blame. I really think they are so detached from reality that they would happily destroy their own country, if they thought it meant they could be proven 'right' about Trump in the process.

This is the sad part. The RINO establishment that hate Trump because he took over the party, and lefties HATE Trump so much that they WANT for him to fail, even if it hurts our Country. You see some of that in this thread. I sure do not consider those people REAL Americans.

Well maybe he says “nice things” about Putin and Xi, because he understands they do have a lot of leverage.

But China and Russia aren’t going to give Trump political or trade concessions because he sweet talks them. If this trade war goes down it’s going to get ugly quickly.

It’s an interesting question who has the leverage in US/China trade dispute, really an embargo.

Seems to me like we probably need the stuff China sells us worse than they need to sell it to us. But I could certainly be wrong.

It will be interesting to watch it play out.

3. We fold immediately, announce an ineffective trade deal where China paper commits to buy however much of our stuff and we go back to business as usual.

We just exempted chips, computers and electronics from tariffs, basically everything meaningful we buy from China.

WhY are you conflating "saying nice things" and "leverage"?

HE NEGOTIATING.

He knows it does not good to verbally attack and play tough guy with certain world leaders.

It has nothing to do with hand. We could wipe Russia and NoKorea off of the map with the press of a button. Russia can't even defeat Ukraine and they're pulling people off the streets to fight.

China's economy will suffer if they can't sell into the strongest economy in the world. And if they're already in a recession Trump has plenty of leverage already.

Why did we just exempt electronics from the sanctions do you figure? Because tariffing them would hurt us more than them? Or more 4D chess at work?

So here you go. Eagerly anticipating the explanation for how announcing ruinous tariffs on a Trade competitor and then 2 days later exempting basically everything of strategic/economic value is brilliant tactics.

When tariffs are announced; "Trump is a moron! This will raise the prices of electronics we buy from China! That fvckin idiot!!!!"

When you learn the tariffs currently exempt electronics from China: "HAHAHA! The fvcin loser caved! AAHAHAHA!!!!"

This is why I think Trump knows more about negotiating trade deal with China than you do. Goodness.

Whats funny is now you’re going to be high fiving your maga buddies about the exact same policies that were in place 6 months ago because now Trump “negotiated” them. This is a con.

So you're saying electronics WERE part of the tariffs before, and Trump just removed them?

Do you have a source better than randos on Twitter for that? Cause I was told by you and other liberals here that I can't trust Twitter.

But let's assume electronics are out. If so, that means Trump has even more leverage. Because China NEEDS the US to keep importing their electronics.

So he NEGOTIATES a new trade deal with China by NOT raisin tariffs on the items we want the most from China unless he HAS TO.

Again, you told us this was your big problem with Trump's plan: It would raise prices on the stuff we wanted from China. Now that you find out you were wrong about that...you are still mad at Trump???

You keep pulling for Trump to mess up so you can be proven right about him. The rest of us will be over here pulling for America. Good luck.

It’s an announcement from the White House.

Look obviously I get that Trump could walk out and take a dump in the street and you’d praise it as performance art.

My function here is to point out objective reality and hope that at some point people collectively realize that the con currently being run is the same con as always just dressed up differently (“Now featuring populism!”). I know it’s an uphill climb.

I fully disagree. there is never a time you can afford to lose your best by FAR customer. Their economy is still in collapse. They love to play tough, but we are holding most of the cards. China tried to go to our allies to gang up against us...they were FLATLY rejected. China soon will look for a way to save face publicly, but they will make concessions

Let me bring FACTS instead of your hate here. Trump could cure cancer and you would still be pissed, because you dislike him. NOW we have FACTS.
