People didn't hate McCain and Romney like they hate Trump. Trump is easily the most hated political figure (from the perspective of the left) in modern US history. Biden's "popularity" is all about hating Trump. Even Bush and Nixon weren't loathed like this.

I was about 11 years old back when Reagan defeated Carter during the 1980 election and hearing other kids calling Reagan a racist. My dad was in the last year of serving sea duty on the Nimitz in Norfolk and was never happier to move back to Jacksonville a month later.
So many youthful liberals were so depressed for at least a week.
Nixon wasn't "loathed", really. Not until nearly two years after he was re-elected. In January '73 at his Inauguration he wasn't "loathed" and really not even in August of '74 when he resigned. People back then still had a sense of morality about politics and were very upset and disappointed with his character.
Bush was only "loathed" by the hard core left, which hadn't grown to the size it is today, but their fanaticism based on the fact that they could not let go of their hatred and belief that he'd "stolen" Algur's victory (complete lie) was unrelenting.
Trump is loathed. He stands in the way of their BAU in the Swamp. Some of those who hate him the most are DC "lifers". How dare he come in there and actually expect them to give their best for their employers - the American people?
