New Story Santa Ono blocked from becoming UF’s next president by Board of Governors

Dang so can he go back to Michigan or is this guy now screwed out of a job? Seems like announcing him as the choice publicly was a mistake, if it wasn't 100% at done deal. Obviously I don't know enough details to comment on this being a good or bad decision to hire him, but more so commenting on the process.

Sucks for the guy if he's now out of a job.

Wow! This didn’t go down well. I guess after the last appointment of President by the Board of Trustees that didn’t turn out well….the Board of Governors are taking their own closer look.

I agree that it should not have been announced until it was a done deal .

DeSantis appointed board are not going to approve a leftist. Probably should have kept his first round of approval more low key.

There were a lot of questions about whether he was a good fit in the state of Florida. Questions were raised by Rick Scott and Byron Donalds, both of whom have strong voices in this state.

So the experienced, well-respected president of Michigan, a large public university consistently ranked above Florida in academics and is also strong in sports (at least the 2 major men's sports), is not good enough for UF? I guess owning the Libs and chasing the DEI boogeyman is more important than actually running a university.

SAD.

Pretty weak argument when your position is “if he’s good enough for….”. Not sure whether he would be good or not, but I find your argument…unconvincing.

After the blunder that was Ben sasse im not surprised. Politics is poisoning this country in both sides.

Of course you would find my argument unconvincing, you can't be convinced when your only argument against him is he's a Lib and I want to own them.

His resume is EXTREMELY strong, and it is doubtful we will get anyone as respected as him to apply for the position now. But you, like so many others, believe it's easy to run a large university effectively. Maybe we should just let Trump appoint our next president. I bet you would be convinced by that.

Some of you forget the largest enrollment of Jewish students in the US is at Florida. If it is true as reported that Santa Ono allowed the antifada, free Palestine and antisemitism protesters that disrupted their campus at Michigan for at least a month disrupting the student’s safety, they could naturally follow him here to Florida - which will not be tolerated and we shouldn’t have to deal with that huge dangerous problem to protect the safety of our own students. Florida is a top academic institution & does not want to become another Columbia or Harvard with those problems. Our students are proud of their academic and athletic achievements and we want them to continue to desire to become a Gator graduate. We don’t need dangerous disruption activity

Longing for the days when I had no idea what my university president’s politics were. We won big in football and basketball. The Swamp was on University. Life was good.

Well said

He should never have been allowed to be considered with his anti Israel views. UF has the largest Jewish student population on the country. This is not a right or left issue but an issue where he stood on a side against Israel on whatever happened in October 2023. University of Michigan is being investigated by the Trump administration for its actions against Jewish students.

You can't be a race & group activist and become UF president.....not with this Gov and his appointees. I had my doubts this guy would pass through the board of governors after researching his past positions.

That was long before the Commies started talking control of the University system

That’s the way it should be. Florida wants to continue to attract the brightest academic and athletic achievers who can excel in peace

It didn't seem to matter when Richard Spencer was able to come speak on campus and disrupt the students safety.
