...taking sadgator jr to his first gator hoops game in the O’Dome tomorrow.

sadgator jr is 15. Been going to gator football games since he was 2, but never seen hoops in Hogtown. He’s been to the NCAA tourney in Orlando and the NIT in DC (oddly), but never at home. Lucky kid (other than having sadgator as a father), should be a fun day.

Go Gators! Beat Bama!

A great day of fun, despite the loss.

sadgator and sadgator jr tore it up as usual. Visited many old haunts and facilities, watched baseball practice, met and hung out with Dick Vitale for a while (no joke), and shopped for a bit of needed gator merch. Couldn’t have asked for more...other than a win, of course.

Observations:

1. The new O’Dome is crazy nice, it is almost too luxurious. It feels a bit too sterile and needs some old school Rocky III injected into it. We are spoiled as shit. At times when the entire dome should have been rocking, everybody other than the Rowdies were sitting on their hands or shoving bbq nachos in their mouths.

2. This team, while loaded with talent, does not play well together as a team. It is a collection of super talent individuals...if they can’t evolve past that, we aren’t going anywhere. Huge blow to the NCAA hopes today.

3. The Dazzlers are so hot that the outcome of the game hardly matters. The bathrooms in sadgator manor are going to occupied for a good portion of the day tomorrow, sadgator is cetain of that!

4. Gainesville without the Monkey isn’t the same, but sadgator can happily report that the Town is alive and well.

sadgator will remember Relish for next time. The transition on University from dive bars to quasi-urban upscale mixed use is quite interesting.

Much like the O’dome, some of it feels a litttle too posh and manufactured. As the real estate values have recovered and become more valuable, it has obviously driven some of the Mom and Pop souvenir and smaller places out of there. Gators Plus, for example, is all that is left of the Gator apparel stores in the strip, and it is a shell of what it once was in its heyday. UF’s bookstore and sport shop have killed it. There are a crap load of vacant storefronts just waiting for the conversion. The old Florida Bookstore will probably be one of the next.

There was always money in Gainesville, but it was hidden a bit better. Now it is more in your face. The comforts of available high end lifestyle services and amenities are everywhere from the new dorms, to the Union, to University Ave itself. It all seems a little too easy and the undergrads seem a bit too entitled now. It is palpable at the games.

Perhaps that is just the way of the world and that evolution is not limited to Gainesville. sadgator probably sounds like an old fart, but it does make him long for a simpler time when UF hadn’t “made it” yet and we were all climbing up the mountain together.

In any event, the chicks are still hot....and that is all that really matters.

tl;dr version: Gainesville is becoming Orlando.
