President Trump signs EO shutting down the Dept of Education

He and W seem(ed) to like to talk to the public on a 6th grade level. Seems(ed) to work. I hardly watch any speeches because they are usually mind-numbingly boring.

He needs to communicate his vision here much better. Not to me. Not to you. But most people do not pay attention to anything more than I few headlines.
I agree completely. This is a move that needs to be sold. And it's an easy sell, just remind the public of where our educational ranks are vs the rest of the world, and detail what it will be replaced with. Moderates in particular will panic over moves like this if the reasoning for it isn't carefully laid out.

Another example of how Trump supporters have no problem criticizing Trump, and do so as adults. Hope @GatorTheo is taking notes.

He should have had the original Act that created it read aloud so everyone could hear what it was supposed to do, then spend time showing everyone what it was actually doing.

Reagan was one vote shy from eliminating it in 1983 but a RINO in the Senate like Theo voted it down. 🤬🤬🤬
I believe we fell one vote short around that time from sending the balanced budget amendment to the states for ratification! 40 years of deficit spending! 36T in debt!

Something we NEVER see the other side do.....

Y'all just wanna call me names. I'll tell ya again but I know it won't matter. I cannot be a 'rino' because I am not a republican. I'm NPA.

I'm not 100% in favor of eliminating DOE. I'd like to see them focus on making sure all American children have an OPPORTUNITY for a world class education. Leaving it up to the states could end up like leaving voting up to the states....a mish mash of quality and crap.

How does forcing educational uniformity at the federal level ensure quality?

Explain how ending DOE takes this away. (THEN you will have the obvious answer)

Public education in this country has become an absolute embarrassment with the national test scores. Many of us or most of us who got a public education did so without a dept of education. I don't think I suffered for it.

Two of the most destructive words in this country are "teachers union". What we need is a students union to fight for the kids, because it sure ain't the dems.

A mosh mash of quality and crap is a step in the right direction

The problem is, they don't know what to do with lousy students. They waste a lot of resources trying to make it look like they're not lousy and it holds the better students back.

How does quality control work anywhere? You establish standards, monitor and test. And I'm talking strictly about academic issues.....not social engineering.
Quality control works to ensure uniformity of outputs. You can't do that when you don't have uniformity of inputs.

For example, I have a friend who is a teacher in Montana. Every winter, in the middle of the semester, her students stop going to classes for a week so they can spend a week learning how to process animals killed during a hunt. They literally empty a classroom and bring in a dead bison and break it down and process it.

She teaches on an indian reservation.

Standards at the federal level would actually impede process, in many cases. Each state is different, the students in rural Florida are living under much different conditions than students in urban Detroit or the islands on Hawaii. States should be given the freedom to create an educational process tailored to their students. That will also mean 50 different approaches to the same problem, which will lead to innovation much faster.

The problem with the Dept of Ed now is it's way too federalized with way too much power over states.

Well, you'd have to have people with actual functioning brains doing the work. Exceptions could be made if needed but small changes, like skipping a week of school, aren't going to affect the overall product.

I agree with you that the current DOE is more of a hinderance than an aid. It needs to be totally restructured.

Is it stupidity, or corruption? This is another reason I don't like bloat at the federal level, it makes it easier to hide the corruption. Spread it out to 50 states and there is far less cover for it.
