OT: Lost One Yesterday To COVID19-She Was 18

she was a healthy 18 year old...... was out jogging feeling just a little weak three days ago........

......worked on her for hours. Intubated her, floated a Swan-Ganz, coded her with the CT surgeon for 45 minutes, had to tell her mom and dad she died. Had to listen to that bloodcurdling scream from her mom and watch her dad punch the wall and fall to his knees.

She’s one of those very rare pediatric patients that gets systemic vasculitis and actually died of a massive myocardial infarction with normal coronaries. We were planning on trying to place an Impella cardiac assist device in hopes of bridging her to either cardiac recovery or transplant.

None of this changes my views on playing college football or opening the country back up. You can’t hide from this. But it is a reminder of how tragic this can be sometimes. It is sad poignant personal reminder of how helpless we are sometimes as doctors. Nothing worked.

Rule number 2: Doctors can’t change rule number 1
