Saban may be the best coach, but Meyer is the best recruiter I've ever seen...
Storyline: Ohio State is rolling in recruiting. It has the top-ranked recruiting class nationally and it doesn’t look like the Buckeyes are anywhere near finished loading up once again.
The School Up North can talk the talk but Urban Meyer is running over Big Ten opponents on the field, in recruiting and has the Buckeyes poised for another loaded recruiting class.
Meyer dipped into Florida for five-star defensive back Shaun Wade. He kept five-star offensive lineman Josh Myers from Miamisburg, Ohio, home. Ohio State’s coaches went and got four-star running back J.K. Dobbins out of Texas and the Buckeyes are not slowing down.
There are plenty of top targets left on the board. Many have Ohio State right at the top. After such recent success and an outstanding NFL Draft class, Meyer is loading up again and that’s not good news for the rest of the conference – or the country.
First take: “It definitely looks like Ohio State's 2017 class is only going to get more impressive as things move closer to National Signing Day. Five-stars Trevon Grimes, Jeff Okudah and Lamont Wade all have the Buckeyes at or near the top of their lists while Rivals100 prospects such as Cam Akers, Baron Browning, Tyjon Lindsey, Tate Martell, Darnay Holmes, Donovan Peoples-Jones and more continue to take a close look towards Columbus. Combined with Rivals250 in-state stars Amir Riep and Jaylen Harris, there are plenty of big-time players left on the board for OSU that are very realistic possibilities.
“Meyer is using the momentum coming off a national championship the year these prospects were just starting their recruiting process and combining that with the draft success that the program had this spring to continue to build momentum with some of the nation's top prospects. A selective approach this year has also allowed the coaching staff to focus in on a smaller pool of prospects.
“You can never discredit a team like Alabama that has shown time and time again that it can close in a big way, but at this point it would seem that Ohio State is the clear favorite to land the nation's top class.” – Marc Gilver, BuckeyeGrove.com
Second take: “It’s a year off the national championship, it’s the NFL Draft for sure, it’s Urban Meyer, it’s a whole combination of things that are going to draw the best kids there. As long as they continue to recruit and be in that range of the top SEC teams in the country, they’ll continue to challenge for national championships. If you go back to the whole Harbaugh thing, he has more to worry about than Alabama. He has a team in his own division that is starting to look like they simply reload rather than recruit.” - Farrell
