Y'know, even if the article is dead on correct, he could have avoided this by just not being a douchebag.
He's really not going to get any sympathy from anyone.
And it is a real shame because he is a good swimmer and could have made some play and bank off the Rio relay gold.

Agreed. His behavior is that of a teenager. However, he's not the second cousin to satan either.
It was just a crazy confluence of events, one of which was that he acted like a drunken, entitled douchebag, as Sadgator said. If his mom hadn't blabbed the story on a bus to a complete stranger, who ended up being a reporter, nobody ever hears a word about it. If he hadn't done that stupid follow up interview with Billy Bush, all of this goes away. I think part of the problem is that he doesn't seem very bright. Really, the story he ended up telling was pretty close to the original story, but the way he presented it in the interview with Matt Lauer was terrible. Anyway, between endorsements and future work for NBC's Olympic coverage, this probably ended up costing him millions.
Lochte certainly isn't without blame but surprise surprise if the Rio police didn't tell the whole truth either. Lots of corruption in Brazil when it comes to this type of stuff.
Swimming is probably a pretty good sport for dumb people. Not much to process. You just swim in one direction as fast as you can until you hit a wall, then turn around.

Yes, lots of corruption in Brazil and many other countries that is why you need to behave in other countries. He lost a lot of cash over this incident.
