Impact of Mario at the U

Question:

How long until Insta claims he wanted Mullen gone so we could hire Napier, the guy he wanted as our HC for years? I say right after Spring football.

Oh that's a tough one.

I think he'll wait to see how the staff pulls together and start from the ground up.

He'll find a Doug Nussmeier that says something about a kid that he likes and latch on there. Then he'll look at the DC and find something he really likes about him.

Im curious to hear what his nicknames for Mullen and Grantham will be going forward.

I’d be curious to hear why you say that. They were 8-3 last year and went 7-5 this year. Not only that they just lost to FSU a few weeks ago. I agree that Mario doesn’t impress but I do think he is a step up from Manny.
Manny took the jobs away from the underperforming upper class men and loaded up the line up with freshman. Since then the effort has totally changed and Miami went 5-1 and let FSU off the hook. Mario has been skull drugged all over the field by an inferior Utah team in playoff ramification games and in the last 6 quarters they've beat their brains in to the tune of 52-7. Yes that's not the largest sample size. But every year media hypes up Oregon and they always face plant. I mean everybody was screaming for Harbaugh to be fired. I'm just saying expecting a first time HC to turn around a program that's been a disaster for 20 years seems a little premature. But I thought Florida should have totally revamped their recruiting efforts and given Mullen one more year but I know I just lost everybody on the last sentence lol

Miami’s record is worse this year than last year. They went 5-1 against a bunch of tomato cans and they proceeded to lose to a bad FSU team. I agree that there is nothing special about Mario but I do think he’s better than Manny.

But if your looking for a really hot take I never saw any reason to think that with a full year of AR -15 Mullen wouldn't have beat Georgia again. They just let the final 2 minutes of the half snow ball out of control. I mean why not give Mullen another year and give him the same army of recruiters and analysts that your giving Napier? Glad for Michigan they decided to give Harbaugh one more shot before pulling the plug.

Mullen had no real desire to recruit or hire assistants who had their heart in it. It was painfully clear to most it was time for UF to move on from him. So we did..

I don't disagree with this. However, IMHO I don't think Mullen was ever going to become a good enough recruiter to get us consistently over the hump. Maybe I'm wrong.

Because I don’t think Mullen had much interest in recruiting no matter what you gave him.

He probably wouldn't I would have just liked for him to have had the same commitment that Napier is getting.
I think Napier is getting it because he asked for it, and knew what to ask for. The fact that he places the premium on recruiting and Mullen never bothered to ask for that kind of support is probably why mullen didn’t get that support? Now, if he did ask and got rebuffed and they turn around and gave that to Napier I could see him being a little salty, but I don’t think that’s the case

Who knows it was probably time for him to move on. Looking back he wasn't really a fit for Florida. Perfect for Miss St. Should have stayed there.
I still believe Dan Mullen is a good coach. He need to find a good fit for him and the expectations that exist at that school.

I think it probably started out with Florida rebuffing Mullen. Floridas attitude about recruiting was always Spurrier didn't need it.Yes I know there getting a new stand alone football facility but that attitude didn't really change till after the Georgia game Kirby started running his mouth about how great a recruiter he was. He should have just beat them and kept his mouth shut like Saban does. Now Floridas all about recruiting. What a dumb @ss.

He could coach forever at Duke or Colorado or somewhere like that. Every few years he’ll almost beat someone they shouldn’t and they’ll all be happy with that.

He needs a job at a school that isn’t top 3 in their conference. He was great at Miss St and would be at a places like you mentioned.

if he wants to be at a top program, he needs to be an OC.

Because he isn’t bad, he just isn’t elite

Exactly… and was it just me, or did it feel like he never saw us as a destination, but as a stepping stone. I think he’s been angling for an NFL job and saw us as just one stop on that ladder.

He’s a high profile OC, he doesn’t have the little things it takes to be a big time HBC

When Florida hired Mullen, they were still focused on getting an "offense guy" due to the trauma of the Muschamp years. Even just a few years ago, it was still common for boosters and ADs to insist that big-name schools "recruit themselves" and what they really need is a genius play-caller. I think the idea of "CEO HC" at a college program, with a huge staff of NFL-style specialized analysts and recruiters, was viewed as distinct to Saban and would be impractical elsewhere.

Then Clemson went on a tear after losing Chad Morris, who was widely assumed to be the Brains to Dabo's Forrest Gump. Dabo focused on his strength: his charisma among the players and put together a Saban-like professional staff to handle the Xs and Os. Jimbo left FSU when he realized that he wasn't going to get the level of commitment Dabo got to build a Saban-like operation. Since then, Clemson has dominated the ACC while FSU is still digging itself out of the ground and losing to FCS teams in their own house.

A common pitfall when hiring in any field is the tendency to focus too much on correcting a specific trait that was deficient in the previous guy. If you are hiring a replacement for someone who had a bad attitude and couldn't get along, you may focus too much on getting a "nice guy" to the detriment of other factors.

When McElwaine was hired, UF was focused on "correcting" Muschamp's dated "Defense Wins Championships" dogma and his rage disorder, so they got an affable "offense guy." When Mac turned out to be an off-putting goofball, they found a different "offense guy" who was more level-headed. Then the level-headed guy ended up being a little too level-headed and was too detached and aloof to be effective as a leader, recruiter, and public figure.

Good evaluation. So you go out and hire a guy who doesn’t G A S about what anybody thinks and leave him alone. Hello Nick Saban.

Oregon got that NIKE money.

Mario to UM makes me nervous.

I wanted MANNY FOREVER!!

Theres talk about him being a top candidate for VTech. That might be interesting but, hey, if you're not going to recruit....
VTech stresses recruiting big-time. ACC may be a bit easier but that arrogant prick still won't put in the time to visit any prospects. That bum!!
