What do you think of the Head Coach having both duties? Didn't Mullen try this?

I hate it and I really don't see any why it's absolutely necessary. Urban Meyer had coaching positions on both sides of the ball, yet when he was a HC he didn't needlessly overburden himself.

If a HC wants to be involved in the play calling, you can still do that AND have an OC in a combo system like Coastal Carolina.

Worked for Spurdog, lol. Napier was a starting QB in college and his dad is a longtime legendary high school coach in NW GA so I get why he wants to be in the game calling and controlling things like he's playing with his players. It works for the elite offensive minds like Spurrier and Leach but we don't know yet if Napier is that good of an offensive mind and that good of a feel for the in game flow that being a HC/OC/QB coach combo requires.

His play calling was not good last night. SOS could do it but the game has become so specialized very difficult to do. As has been mentioned Napier is generally conservative traditional type play caller. With athletes would like to open it up more.

JMO, but I think the HC should have a separate guy for either/both OC/DC. Obviously the coordinators need to have a philosophy that’s closely aligned with that of the HC. However the HC is more like a CEO and needs to delegate those responsibilities. Again JMO.

I think we will get there.

Still, it's an interesting dichotomy, having him split the administrative duties into tiny pieces and hiring a ton of staff to do each little thing, but at the same time he himself trying to be 3 coaches at once.

We hated it with Jimbo. Don't get me wrong, when Jimbo's complex plan worked it was tough to beat, but when it didn't he refused to adjust...it's like his pride would get the best of him and he'd just keep forcing the same game plan regardless of outcome. Heck, I think Jimbo is dead last in 4th down attempts among active coaches.

If Napier is from the Saban regime then he needs to do like Nick and delegate. Kirby Smart does it and we see how it works out for him and he's from the Saban regime.

How much is Saban involved in the game defensive calls? Was he basically their game DC years ago? I don't remember.

I didn't know Napier is/was a defensive coordinator like Saban and Kirby. Lane Kiffin doesn't seem to have a problem with his own play calling. Then again, we saw how that worked out for McElwain when he coached at UF with Nuss. as the OC.

So please tell me, was Napier ever a defensive coach like Kirby and Saban?

You do know more about Fisher than I do during his last 3 seasons at FSU, but it seems the teams main problem was on the defensive side of the ball. From what I saw, FSU moved the ball well most of the time with the French QB and the one before him, I just can't remember who it was in 2015.

Did they have a good QB after Winston? I vaguely remember the guy but thought he was always messing up in the big games. That one RB they had could gash you pretty good though.

I never said anything about defense. I said he is from the same type coaching as Nick and Kirby where you hire 20 plus coaches and delegate duties. Nick and Kirby dont call offensive plays but Billy does. He needs an offensive coordinator and then Billy can focus on running and overseeing the team and final decisions.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I don't have an issue with it if they are the playcaller and they are good at calling plays

Many have done so successfully, including SOS.

OC/OL - Rob Sale

Assoc HC - Offense / RB's - Jabbar Juluke

So maybe CBN just needs to hire a dozen more to the staff.... 🙄

I will be à little more generous. Instead of a C-, I will give him a C.

It's nice that some bad behavior on the field is noticeably missing. However, I don't think there's necessarily anything, by performance and results, that can be complimented on due to him. He's just.....there....like filling a spot.

I know there's only so much à certain roster can do, but the play calling is still just as bad on both sides of the ball.

Better hope he gets some serious ballers, because if the playcalling continues like this then he's going to need the players' abilities to make up for the play calling.

3 losses in 4 SEC games, and a lack of player development (particularly at the QB spot) should earn you a D-. However, Napier should get credit for the Utah win and what appears to be a better recruiting class and philosophy, so sadgator would give him a completely unremarkable “C.”

That being said, sadgator is fearful of what that grade will be in a few weeks from now.

I would give Napier a C or C+ at the moment. I think you need to include more than just play on the field such as recruiting, culture, organization/structure. I’m actually been pretty good with the offense. Of course there is room for improvement but we are 25th in yards per play. Not bad with a QB that isn’t accurate and an average WR group with zero explosiveness. The offense gets bad field position and not many series in a game because the defense is so so bad. That makes it even more difficult.

Off the field performance has been much better than the on-the-field product, for sure. Hopefully, next year the influx of new & better blood, plus the results of the change in culture and the coaches adapting to play in the big time will translate into better performance during games.

Not sure what grade to give him. We are playing with little to no talent. Almost every "expert" pre-season had us at 6-6. We seem to be trending toward that. Went 6-6 last year with better talent.

This was the infuriating thing about Mullen. A good enough offensive mind to win 2-3 more games than the talent would indicate, but was satisfied with 5-win talent. If he had pulled 9-10 win talent, he'd be King of Gainesville right now. Instead he's gone and we have a mediocre team.
