Mullen has taken a page from Saban by having non-coaching advisers in place, ready to step in at a moment’s notice just as Steve Sarkisian replaced Lane Kiffin when he left Bama (right before the NC game with Clemson !) to become HC at Florida Atlantic..

We don't know for sure that Todd Grantham is actually leaving for Miss State. If he does, I wish him the best of luck & hope he does well.

If that does happens, Mullen will move Chuck Heater or someone else equally talented into position with no problem.

EDIT -

In Heater, Mullen is not only getting a guy he’s worked with in the past, but also one that has spent over four decades in college football with rare experience in major college football on both sides of the ball.

In addition to being a defensive coordinator at Colorado State, Marshall, Temple, and having the co-coordinator title at Florida, Heater worked as Cornerback Coach and Recruiting Coordinator under Urban Meyer at Florida from 2005-2010.

Heater has also coached the running backs and tight ends at stops at Colorado, Washington, Toledo and Northern Arizona during his career.

If Mullen is astute enough to have prepared Kyle Trask, to take over for Feleipe Franks & not miss a beat, he has spent equal time preparing to replace any of his coaches who take other positions. He undoubtedly has a list of coaches he can / will call if Todd Grantham leaves.

Another coach Mullen has looked at before is Kevin Patrick - currently the DL coach at NC State since 2017 after serving as defensive line coach at Texas Tech. He's also coached at North Texas and South Florida.

Patrick is a former first-team AP All-American defensive end and Big East Defensive Player of the Year. He was on Miami national title teams in 1989 and 91, was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2015 and is known as a strong recruiter and coach.

He did not want to make a lateral move to UF as DL coach, but, IMO, would listen to DC offer.
