One week after 2016 power forward Tyler Cook and his family made an official visit to Florida, the entire Gators staff made an in-school visit to Chaminade (MO) to see him today.Cook is scheduled to take an official visit to Iowa on September 18 and according to his father, Trent Cook, will take an official visit to Arkansas either later this month or early in October.
Thursday morning Florida had a coach at Windermere Prep to watch Rivals 3-star 2017 PG David Nickelberry. A 6-foot-6 lead guard, Nickelberry is a sound ball-handler and passer with a high basketball IQ and good court vision. He does a good job getting others involved in addition to always be ready to score. He’s also a dangerous shooter from beyond the arc, especially on kickouts but can make scoring plays off the dribble as well. Nickelberry is lean with long arms which allow him to rebound competitively. He has a good feel for the game.
He recently took unofficial visits to UCLA and USC.
The Gators also checked in on four-star 2017 SG Chaundee Brown at The First Academy in Orlando. The solidly built 6-foot-5 Brown made made his debut at No. 73 in the recently updated Rivals150 for the junior class. A physical shooting guard, Brown plays with a high motor and gets after it at both ends of the court.
A 2016 big man I'm hearing UF will check out is Dontay Bassett at Oldsmar Christian. He didn't play in July due to an injury but is healthy now and gaining high major interest -- Arkansas offered Friday night. Bassett is a 6-foot-9 low block guy, who does most of the scoring in the paint. He's a good defender who rebounds his area well at the defensive end, has good hands, a good motor and does not shy away from contact in the post. Rivals has Bassett rated as a three-star prospect.
Saturday several players from the Elev8 Sports Institute will make the trip up from Bradenton to see campus, visit the basketball facility and take in at least some of the Gators game against East Carolina. One of those players coming is uber athletic A.J. Wilson.
Florida has not offered Wilson, an explosive 6-foot-6 senior wing, but is keeping tabs. Penn State has offered, while a host of high-majors are monitoring his progress. Most see Wilson as a mid-major prospect who, at a high major program, would be a utility player who gives you hustle and defense.
Another explosive wing Florida is keeping tabs on is Jalen Johnson. The North Carolina native excels in the open court, has three-point range and is a more than willing defender. Johnson and Florida are working to set up an official visit to Gainesville, but due to some scheduling conflicts...including a family reunion...the visit may not happen until October.
