The Florida Legislature pushed to change it from a simple majority to a 60% supermajority, because they don't like it when citizens try to take control. It was 10 or 15 years ago iirc

I did a quick search, it was changed from simple majority to 60 in 2006. I'd forgotten this humorous/ironic aspect....it had to be done as a Constitutional Amendment, passed by voters. It only got a little over 55% approval, so would have failed under the rule that it enacted. It's the last Amendment that passed without 60%.
