In Canada they have remeberence day, similar to our Veterans Day. He said every Canadien should buy a poppy pin to honor Canada's fallen heros. Then he said immigrants love to live in Canada, and love what it offers them, but they don't appreciate the people who died giving it to them. He was fired over social media backlash. The man will not back down from his comments.

Good for you, glad some Canadians still have stones.

If you don't love the country, and honor those that have fallen giving you the freedoms you have, then gtfo.

Note: To all the immigrants who do love it, and respect it.. Welcome.

I’m thankful I don’t have to live in Canada. I mean, the people are nice and they make some decent maple syrup, and there are parts that are beautiful for the three or four hours a year when it’s not snowing, but I hate cold. If I never see snow again in my life I won’t miss it at all

Hockey is a huuuuge deal in Canada, and Mr. Cherry was a long-time icon of Canadian Hockey. For the most part, he was speaking inconvenient truths that the Politically Correct class in Canada simply wouldn't stand for.
That's not exactly true. He was a popular figure, but he is now a doddering 85 year-old who has little hockey insight and is not really connected to the game's culture (unless that involves talking about something that happened to Bobby Orr 90 000 years ago). And he was wrong in what he said, which he acknowledges. He made a gross generalization which was not only inaccurate, but inflammatory. He is not the arbiter of all things Canadiana. Canadians fought and died in places like Dieppe so that Canadians could be free, and that includes deciding whether they want to wear a poppy or not.

“First of all, I said, ‘you people out there,’” Cherry said. “I would have changed that if I had the chance to do it over again to ‘everybody,’ to work it in like that,” Cherry told CTV News Toronto’s Michelle Dubé in an interview Tuesday afternoon. “’You people,’ I can see how it hurt some people, I really can see it, but I would have said that, and I said if I hurt anybody, then I’m sorry about it.”

The fact of the matter is, Cherry is a hothead and a bigot who likes to make sweeping and often derogatory, statements. I'm not fan of PC in all cases, but when you are a public figure, you need to choose your words carefully. Cheery often doesn't, and now he's been fired. He doesn't need to try to make a martyr of himself. He's not.

I'm a patriotic veteran living in the heart of a red state. I don't think I saw more than 3 people all day who wore a poppy, nor have I heard a public figure since - or anybody for that matter - make an issue of it.

Liberals whining gets someone fired...im shocked.
Why do you see this as a "liberal" issue? I'm not a liberal and found his remarks crass. So did he in hindsight, and he apologized. This "liberal"/"conservative" divide has got to end. If our parents raised us right, we find some things offensive regardless of our political views.

Said by a liberal.... Liked by a liberal(Sad). Trying to tell me how to think(like a liberal). Take ur socialist ass out of here then. Did his words hurt ur puzzy feelings?

I read his remarks, didn't seem to be a too big of a deal to me. It's a slippery slope this free speech thing. Problem these days is each side spends too much time trying to get what the other side said banned or whoever said it fired. Crazy.

What did he say exactly that warranted his firing? Quote it please, and explain why he deserved termination.

His comments are ridiculous. His assertion is what: immigrants don’t care about veterans. What is that based on? That he sees some asians running around town without wearing poppies? His point is ill supported to the point of near retardation and only first class morons would co-sign, as this thread shows.

Like Clint Eastwood says: Deserve's got nothing to do with it. He's in the entertainment business. If his employer decides he's alienating more viewers than he's worth, he's gone.

And as I said above, his comments were absurd. Why is he singling out immigrants (or "you people" as he refers to them) for a supposed lack of support for veterans? What is that based on? I would guess immigrants probably don't GAF about veterans at about the same rate as everyone else.

Now if he said I walk around town and nobody's wearing a poppy, and I think it's a shame that we all take veterans for granted, no problem. Or if his comments were based on some sort of real evidence, I would say he's entitled to his opinion. But coming out on national tv and saying "Boy I was walking around town today and none of the brown and yellow people I see are wearing poppies, and that just grinds my gears..." you get a pink slip.

He was stating facts. I know the facts hurt the liberals feelings but immigrants dont have a lot of pride in the countries they are moving to. Not like they use to, that doesnt mean they are bad people it simply means they arent inherently patriotic towards that country.

Its been my long held opinion that,,,, SCREW THE PC CROWD.should be the national motto in any FREE society.... o_O

JMOHO -- Those that want to enter the U.S. legally and become full fledged American citizens in the traditional way are always welcome to do so. :)

For the limp wristed liberals, I'd recommend just a wall with penalties.
Those loser invading army wetback criminals, that want to bring their own language, loser cultures, anti-Christian religions, 'Death to America' -- Death to the Infidels' way of life, should be dragged to the nearest border and thrown the hell out of our country. Anyone crossing our borders illegally a 2nd time should be placed in prison for 5 years of 'forced hard labor' and then thrown the hell out again. Caught a 3 time and it's 10 years. A 4th time and it's life (or death). o_O

For those with a set, the real solution is NO WALL, just a 6 foot chain link fence.
Then establish a 50 yard wide mine-field with manned gun towers every 1/4 mile.
Anyone successful in getting thru would then join the above liberal punishment line.

I offered that solution to the White House in an email, but so far they have yet to grow a set. :(

The gutless A-holes that fired Don should be horse-whipped and run outta town on a rail... :p

What are you talking about? What is this based on? Oh your and Don Cherry’s own wild ass speculation? Carry on then.

I see them protesting in the streets and demanding they have the same rights as citizens. Thats what its based on. Im sure your racist azz has never talked to immigrants but i actually know quite a few immigrants. They think America is evil.

So you admit there is a bias towards people of a certain political belief? In the media in particular.

What "Facts" support all the claims of racism, sexism, or facism pointed at a certain President in office today? Where are the facts needed to impeach his orange butt? Strawman argument here.

If it were a person leaning left saying that Naturalized Americans were in the wrong for not buying flags to support Illegal immigrants on "Freedom Day", and then getting fired from FS1, I can guarantee there would be protests from the very same people who justify this man's firing.

What do you want? A survey? You think All immigrants have pride in the country they went to? Some do and some dont. Those are facts. I know facts hurt the feelings but its just the way it is

I wish there was no political divide in this country. I wish I still believed in this holding hands around the campfire, there being no large gaps in financial class systems. However the Liberal in me died out at 19, after seeing the hypocrisy in this world. The true nature of these "peace loving", "accepting" people. Like Santa Clause, I wish I was still innocent enough to believe in fairness and equality. There are too many wolves out there, too many parasites taking out the sheep.

What in the hell are you two blubbering about? My only point is that Cherry, and the two of you, have zero, zero support for the assertion that immigrants care less about veterans. Do I want a survey? Sure. Or a poll, or a first hand conversation or some objective fact that makes the assertion more likely to be true. Among smart people, we call this “reasoning.”

“Some do and some don’t” Is this statement equally applicable to everyone? Or just immigrants. Do either of you care about veterans? As evidenced by what?

This has nothing to do with a supposed lack of evidence of sexism against our current president (although a tape of him saying that he likes to grab strange women “by the pussy” seems to me to be somewhat probative).

Cherry’s comments are a blanket assertion with zero support. That’s my point.
