From what I have read it seems to be triggered by the end of the play clock - that the mic can be on up to the last 15 seconds of the play clock
If - and I am hoping I read it wrong - that is true, the hurry up offenses would seem to greatly benefit as the OC could be telling the QB the actual defensive formations and key reads right up to the snap
