2017 Class B-Ball Recruit Class

PF Chase Johnson 6-7 190 *** - Huntington, WV
Johnson averaged 17.1 points, 8.8 rebound and 2.1 assists for his HS.
2016 Class, then attended Huntington Prep, now available for the 2017 class.
Offers: UF, Tn, -- K-St, VaTech, WVa, Clem.

SF DeAundre Ballard 6-6 180 **** - Atlanta, Ga

PG Shai Alexander 6-4 165 **** - Chattanooga, Tn -- De-committed
Jus-damn, but he's not a critical recruit for White, and replacements are still available.

===========

Per Scout.com’s Brian Snow,
#12 PG Shai Gilgeous-Alexander **** has de-committed from the Gators. No info on where he might be going instead. He says that UF is still in the mix, but he's opened back up his recruitment. Maybe he sees a better chance to play as a true freshman elsewhere, or maybe he just got a be$$er offer elsewhere else?

2017-18 Projected Gator Roster: (Hill Sr and Barry Grad-Sr, expended eligibility)

PG Chris Chiozza 6-0 176 Sr - Memphis, Tn
SG-PG KeVaughn Allen 6-2 183 Jr - Little Rock, Ark
SG Jalen Hudson 6-6 190 rsJr (VaTech xfer) - Richmond, Va
PG Eric hester 6-3 167 So - Clearwater, FL

PG Shai Alexander 6-4 165 Fr **** - Chattanooga, Tn -- De-commit

In last Fridays (10-14-16) intra-squad scrimage:

"Offense is way ahead of defense right now," White said.

In four eight-minute games featuring different team combinations, the Gators unofficially shot a collective 61.3% from the floor, including a sizzling 20-for-34 from the 3-point line (58.8%) and made 16 of 21 free throws (76.2%).

When the D catches up, like they always do, this team is gonna be pretty darn good, just as I suspected it would be in Mike's 2nd year. :)

Those off season workouts and all of the running are going to pay big team dividends, and especially on the D. o_O

Disagree that Alexander is not a critical recruit. He's a top-50 player in what was a three-man recruiting class, so that's a big loss. His offer list isn't that spectacular, so I wonder if some of the bigger programs are getting in on him a little late. White got in on him pretty early, and he has blown up a little bit since then. I doubt playing time was the issue. He would have played plenty. We're not exactly loaded at PG next year.

No problem with a different opinion on how important he is to UF.
I'd say that he'd have likely played some, depending on how fast he picked up both the offense and the DEFENSE in White's schemes. But a lot was not as likely imoho.

Rivals has him at #53 overall. Decent, but it's not like he's a 5 star either.
#2 PG Collin Sexton 6-1 170 ***** - Mableton, Ga
UF is one of ten he lists as medium interest.
While he's maybe an 'unlikely' for UF, there are still many other 4-5 star PG's out there that are still not committed anywhere. His decommit maybe opens a door for another to commit to the Gators.

'Loaded' is a relative term imo. They are also not 'desperate' for a PG either.
Yes, it'd be nice to have him, but it's not a disaster (imo) if he goes elsewhere.

2017-18 Season Projected PG's would have been:

2014 PG Chris Chiozza 6-0 176 Sr **** - Memphis, Tn -- #42 Player
2015 SG/PG KeVaughn Allen 6-2 183 Jr **** - Little Rock, Ark -- #67 Player
2016 PG Eric Hester 6-3 175 So **** - Oldsmar, FL -- #112 Player

* SG/PG Allen has already played the point some in his 1st 2 years, and he's done well there when asked to. With both Hill and Chiozza at the point, he's not been needed there very often, but he can play the point with very little if any drop-off in quality at the position.

2017 PG Shi Alexander 6-3 165 **** - Chattanooga, Tn -- #53 Player
(and who knows, he may re-commit to UF before it's all over)

I originally came in here to remind people that a real sport was still being played.

I got distracted by insta.

Not buying that lying excuse. You came here to be the same distracted douche-bag that you always are.

Only being able to follow a single Gator sport out of 20+ is not dunny-goater's only or least draw-back in the world of intelligent fans. o_O There are many things that he's to narrow-minded to understand or to weak-minded to be able to follow... ;)

He's just being another little mouth-running chit-head as usual, no problem.
(was that the kind of annoying little brother attention that you were again beggin' for)

Oh insta.

What would I do without you?

Prolly just keep on pullin' it, night and day, until you finally go completely blind...
==== back to ignore, you're still a bad cross between annoying and boring ====
---------------

Basketball - Media picks UF 2nd in the SEC behind UK, (Tn picked #13). :p

Soph SG/PG KeVaughn Allen was voted 2nd Team All SEC. :)

Insta, if I am a "bad cross between annoying and boring," I genuinly would like to know how you would describe yourself.

Still waiting on another (update) report on the practice sessions, but nobody has one out yet, or at least I couldn't find one. Things will pick up quickly by Nov. though. :)

I think getting this team into the tourney would be a very good job by Mike White. We've got two guys who are above-average league players, Egbunu and Allen, and two guys who could be above-average league players: D Rob and Hill, if he plays like he did in the second half of last year. Chiozza will give you a solid 20-25 minutes, Hayes looks pretty solid and Barry was a great scorer at Charleston, but I don't know if he played anybody. Leon is a good bench player. We'll need something out of the freshmen and Keith Stone. We need Stone or Bassett to do something, or we will be really thin up front. We need Hester or Barry to do something, or we will be really thin in the backcourt.

SF/PF Justin Leon 6-8 206 Sr (Juco-AA xfer)
He played about 15 Minutes per Game in 2015-16.
5.3 pts == 40 Min. = scaled up to a full game, about 14 pts/gm
3.1 rbs, == 40 Min. = scaled up to a full game, about 9 rbs/gm
Shooting - 49.3% floor, 37.3% arc. -- 46.2% FT
(but he has improved in all areas of his shooting in off-season)
He can play at both SF with Robinson/Barry or PF with Hayes/Stone, as needed. (versatility, high energy, team player)

Florida freshman forward Dontay Bassett is out for the basketball season with a stress fracture in his right foot.

The 6-foot-9, 222-pound Bassett is an Oakland, Calif., native who played last season at Oldsmar Christian School outside of Tampa.

The Gators still project to have depth in the frontcourt with forwards Justin Leon, Devin Robinson, Canyon Barry and Keith Stone.

Redundancy Rules.... ;) --- So the Gator Front Court is:

24. SG/SF Canyon Barry 6-6 215 Sr - ColoSpgs, Colo (Grad-xfer)
1. SF Devin Robinson 6-8 200 Jr - Chesterfield, VA
23. SF/PF Justin Leon 6-8 208 Sr - Conway, Ark (JuCo - Shawnee ILL)

25. PF Keith Stone 6-8 240 rsFr - Deerfield Bch, FL
13. PF/C Kevarrius Hayes 6-9 218 So - Live Oak, FL

32. C/PF Schuyler Rimmer 6-10 249 Sr - Orlando, FL (Stanford xfer)
15. C John Egbunu 6-11 255 rsJr - Bauchi, Nigeria (USF xfer)

So that's 7 guys to cover the 3 spots.

21. PF Dontay Bassett 6-9 222 Fr - Oakland, CA (Oldsmar, FL) OUT

It's really three guys, Egbunu, Stone and Hayes, to cover the two big spots. Everybody else is a wing player, although D Rob and Leon can play some minutes at 4. We will just be small when they do. Rimmer looks like he should be able to play but he was a complete non-entity last year. I don't think he played 10 minutes the rest of the season after that dude from Vanderbilt absolutely murdered him by dunk. Egbunu is very good and Hayes looked like he will be very solid. Hopefully Stone can play.

Better than brainless drivel at least... :p

Everyone knows that physical development doesn't go hand in hand with playing development in the SEC.... (just go ask the players for yourself) o_O
==============

What you missed while you were drooling all over the 'shirtless' pictures:

Junior point guard Chris Chiozza arrived at UF two summers ago weighing 160 pounds. He could do 12 chin-ups. Now he's 176 pounds and cranking out 23 on the bars. It'll be a rare night on the floor that Chiozza is not overmatched size-wise by the player he's guarding, but adding bulk should help make him more physical; more confident too.
------------

There were times during his rookie season when Allen got fatigued. Sometimes even early in halves. Unacceptable. This offseason has been about building a body for greater stamina, while making sure he doesn't lose any of the quickness and explosiveness that allows him to get a shot off anytime he wants. He was an 11 chin-up guy a year ago. He's doubled that to 22 heading into his sophomore season.
-----------
Justin Leon came to the Gators following two seasons of junior-college ball in Illinois. Gaining access to a Southeastern Conference weight room, plus a state-of-the-art dining hall, was going to produce some obvious gains. He went from 196 pounds to 206 in a year. The size difference in his shoulders is pronounced, but Greene's greatest point of emphasis with Leon this offseason were his legs. The guy, be it during practice or games, just fell down too much. The Gators got a surprising lift from Leon as a 3-point shooter (37.3 percent, which led the team), but they need him to keep his feet down on the block and have a much stronger trunk and base to grab rebounds, defend better and be a presence around the paint. He'll look more the part as a senior and stay upright more often after increasing his front squat from 135 points to 260.

So maybe you should go back and actually read some instead of doing your usual, just looking at the pictures.... o_O

The concerns Mike White had about his Florida defense following last week's first scrimmage of the preseason were somewhat allayed after the second Friday. Somewhat.

Last week, when the Gators collectively shot 61.3% and bombed in 58.8% — making 20 of 34 (58.8%)— of their 3-point shots.

Oh, there were still buckets being made — including 56% from the 3-point line — but after a week of making defense a point of emphasis and barely a day since installing some key elements of the press, White felt better about what he saw this time versus last.

For the rest of the story:

Former Gators (10) with new NBA contracts:

Bradley Beal - He was the #3 overall pick in the NBA draft after his freshman year at UF. Beal has been with the Wizards for four seasons and has averaged 16 points per game and three assists per game. He re-signed with the Wizards in July on a five-year, $128 million deal.

AL Horford, after 9 seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, the 4-time NBA All-Star begins the 2016-2017 season donned in green and white as a member of the Boston Celtics. On July 1st, Horford became an unrestricted free agent, and 7 days later signed a 4-year $113 million dollar deal with Boston. Horford now ranks as the highest paid member of the Celtics with the guaranteed $113.3 million.

Chandler Parsons, after 2 seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, entered free agent status. Despite his 2015-2016 season ending early due to a torn meniscus, Parsons remains a statistical standout. Parsons set career high percentages in both field goals (49.2%) and from beyond the arc (41.4%). On June 7th, Parsons and the Memphis Grizzlies came to a 4-year $94 million dollar contract agreement.

Joakim Noah will be back in orange and blue during his 10th NBA season. Noah is back in his hometown after signing a 4-year $72 million dollar contract with New York this summer. The 2-time NBA All Star and 2014 Defensive Player of the Year, Noah's contract places him as the 3rd-highest paid player on the roster behind Carmelo Anthony and Derrick Rose.

Corey Brewer - In July of 2015, Brewer re-signed a 3-year, $23.4 million contract with the Rockets.
--------

Mike Miller is nearing the end of his NBA career. After recent stints with the Grizzlies and the Cavaliers, Miller signed with the Denver Nuggets and has now re-signed for the 2016-2017 season on a 2-year contract worth over $5 million.

Udonis Haslem, following his 4 years at Florida, spent one year playing for a French professional team before signing with the Miami Heat as an undrafted rookie in 2003. Haslem has now spent 13 seasons with the Heat, during which they won 3 NBA championships. He re-signed a 1-year deal for 4.0 Million with the Heat in July of 2016 as the Heat's All Time local fan favorite.

David Lee signed a $3.16 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs on Aug 2nd. Like Speights, Lee also brings a championship experience from the 2015 Warriors team to his new squad.

On July 12th, Marreese Speights signed a $2.86 million deal with the Los Angeles Clippers. Speights, playing as a backup, won a ring with the Golden State Warriors in 2015 and was part of the historic 73-win Golden State team last season.

Another Gator joined the NBA on Oct. 21, 2016 when the Dallas Mavericks announced that the final spot on the 15-man roster went to Dorian Finney-Smith. He and the Mav's finalized a 3-year $2.5 million contract.

Back to this years team...

SG/PG KeVaughn Allen 6-2 183 Soph and C John Egbunu 6-11 255 rsJr are likely the two set pieces as this years starters. That leaves 7 other guys still working to be the other 3 starters. White said, referring to the starting lineup, that he's still not sure who he’ll trot out for the exhibition contest. “It’s just one game. I’m open to a different starting lineup each game, based on production.
Note:
Senior PG Hill has a hammy issue this week, so Junior PG Chiozza will start.

Junior forwards SF Devin Robinson and SF/PF Justin Leon, graduate transfer SG/SF Canyon Barry, redshirt-freshman PF Keith Stone and 6-foot-9 sophomore PF/C Kevarrius Hayes are the other guys competing for their role in the rotation and looking to make a positive impression Wednesday night. White said he’s open to playing Hayes and Egbunu together for a big lineup at times. In general, he feels the Gators can throw out some versatile looks with 7 returning players that have had at least 6 career starts each. He reiterated the message Tuesday that he again wants all those pieces working collectively toward the common goal and not dwelling on individual roles and stats and what not.

Florida went 21-15 in White’s first season with the program. The 2016-17 #2 slotting in the SEC preseason poll was a testament to the depth of experience the Gators have returning, as players and as a coaching staff.

Like I said at the end of last season, I expect them to make the Big Dance in the coming season. Nothing I've seen so far has changed my mind on that. GooooooGATORS!

Loved seeing D. Lee out there last night for the Spurs. He put up pretty good numbers too. 6 pts 6 boards and 2 assists in 11 minutes is making the most of things. Will be interesting to see Horford with Boston and Noah with the Knicks.

Yep, a lot of the boys are still doing their thing in the NBA, and the ones that aren't are in other leagues and doiing well for their levels.

Former Gators with NBA Championship Rings:

1994 Vernon Maxwell - Rockets
1995 Vernon Maxwell - Rockets
2006 Udonis Haslem, Jason Williams - Heat
2007 Matt Bonner - Spurs
2011 Corey Brewer - Mavs
2012 Udonis Haslem, Mike Miller - Heat
2013 Udonis Haslem, Mike Miller - Heat
2014 Matt Bonner - Spurs
2015 David Lee, Marreese Speight - Warriors

U-D still leads the pack with 3 NBA Championships.
