A purdue QB just transferred in?

Austin Applyby. Lost his starting job to a RS-FR in late Sept.

Is this a joke? I mean, are we really down to taking backups at bottom dweller D1 schools? Jeez. Here's to hoping Feleipe Franks is a fast learner.

My team is a train wreck. You guys are getting a great guy and he may actually be pretty good if you surround him with actual good players from your team. John Shoop ruined all of our QB's and our program is in rough shape. If he doesn't start or anything he will at least make a good backup.

I believe this kid is just coming in to provide some depth. I think after the season we just had Mac doesn't want to be shorthanded at QB again. We really only had 2 QBs this season in Harris and Grier.

Give Mad credit for at least trying to get the numbers back up at positions with low numbers. OLine last year and QB this year.

Here's the thing - things this year COULD have been worse. After losing Grier, think of what would have happened if Harris went down from an injury? You think it was bad? lol it could have gotten worse.

Not trying to be a smartass, but how much worse could it really have gotten?

lol Harris was the starter. By definition that means he was the best of 2 or 3 options. We might have gone with the Vandy QB transfer that wasn't good enough to play QB at Vandy - he was a WR. I'm not sure about the 3rd option but logically - yes - it could have gotten worse :)

I just looked him up. He was not offered by any big time program in 2012. His Purdue stats are not very good. He generally throws as many ints as he does TDs

But some folks will like him because he is a big, tall kid.

Not a fan.

Well, how many of our Qb's transferred out and did much better at different schools? Too many in recent years! Just look at Driskel and others like him. I'm not saying that this guy is the answer but sometimes a different environment is what an athlete needs to break through.

A complete joke and waste of a scholarship. Even if you remove Harris from the picture, we have 3 QB's on scholarship for next year. If need be, Harris could be your emergency 4th QB. And we're still after Haskins according to reports out there. We're bringing in a guy who lost his job at Purdue, and they have one of the worst offenses in the country. Soon from now we'll be bringing in guys from Grambling. This staff may be reading their own press clippings as 'QB gurus' too much. They must think they can take everyone else' trash and turn them into stars.

Which is really amazing considering they can't even turn their own trash into stars.

Right. Or even make them average. But hey more 3rd stringers from bottom feeders should do the job.

And for those thinking he is just being brought here for 'depth' there are only so many reps to go around in any one practice. Would you rather the freshmen who are a part of our future get those reps or some hack who couldn't get it at Purdue? How does this guy even getting reps as a camp arm further this team in any way?

What was Shane Matthews on our depth chart when Steve brought him to life?

In order to find the diamonds, you gotta mine a lot of coal, so increasing the depth chart is really not a bad thing.

But you have to be willing to at least try them out.

That was sadgators biggest complaint this year. We didn't even try anything/anyone else. sadgator is willing to accept most others' positions that Grady wasn't a real option and there simply wasn't anybody else. Let's hope we see some willingness to use a hook and tinker more next season.

He's a competitor but does not throw a great ball. Our team was so bad the past few years that it's tough to know how good or bad Appleby is. He will work hard and learn the offense fast, but throws a poor deep ball and lacks touch on short routes. Interceptions were a problem as well, but half of those can probably be blamed on our O line and receivers.

The difference with Shane though is he was a highly recruited quarterback in high school who played for a long time Mississippi high school football power, Pascagoula High, that historically produces a lot of talent. It's the biggest high school in the state. Terrell Buckley played on the same team with Shane Matthews. On top of that, the head coach of the program was Shane's father. Shane led the team to the state championship and a 14-0 season. He led his basketball team to the state championship although they did not win. He was a helluva an athlete.

Stop trying to paint Shane as a diamond in the rough. He's not. He just got lost in the disaster that was Gator football under Galen Hall. I was student equipment manager when Hall was head coach. It was a very dark time for Gator football. There was quite a bit of talent on that team that was being mismanaged.

Here's a pretty good article on Shane.

He threw two pick sixes against Marshall.

We have holes all over the roster and we're out here offering QB's who can't start on their own HS team, offering friends of highly rated recruits whose best offers are from the likes of Grambling just to entice the highly rated best friend to come, and now giving scholarships to failed QB's from nobody schools. If the shine of a new staff wasn't still there, people would be way more critical of some of these roster decisions.

Offering several players who can't start on their high school teams.

Yea, especially when we are just about full

My HS coach was at Pascagoula for a while, it's all he ever talked about along with the kids he had sign at Bama.

The post earlier about Shoop ruining Purdues offense led me to these articles

Just wondering - how many total "reaches" do you think? Just asking your opinion - thanks.

There's definitely a few head scratches. lol and I'm generally on the side that sees the "potential" of the guy in question haha.

The only way I justify it - when you have a boat with 15 holes in it, plugging up 12 or 13 still feels pretty good. We'll see how things turn out but yeah there's 3-4 moves I'm not really thrilled about. That said, it feels like the program is heading in the right direction...I just don't get 3 or 4 of the moves.

Trask, Antonio Nelson, Jeawon Taylor, Forsythe, McWilliams, Lenton, and Aaron Robinson for starters. And of course this Appleby character. None of these make the slightest bit of sense to me.

We only have Appleby for a year - not exactly the biggest risk.

Which makes the move even more useless. He's already proven to not be very good. So lets say there's a miracle and the coaches are able to turn him into a stud, he's gone in year. Wouldn't that time be better served developing guys who actually have a future with the team? If he doesn't start he's stealing a scholarship and reps that could be better served elsewhere.
