There have been times this year where the UF’s men’s basketball team reminds me of the Spurrier years with Wuerfel. When Danny would drop back and throw the ball, you just were comfortable knowing that it would be a completion. I have felt that way a lot this year when the basketball leaves Clayton’s hands or when AMart drives the lane or when Will Richard lets it launch. You just have this great feeling that good things are going to happen. It’s rare air, indeed. And I just love every second of it, knowing that it is a special time. I feel like we are playing with house money. No one thought Todd would be here in year three. And yet here we are.
Sunday was the biggest game in Todd’s coaching career. I look at the UConn game more like a courtroom battle. A young guy who just recently passed the bar going against a wiley veteran in the courtroom who is good at working the judge. The veteran knows all the tricks because he’s been there before.. The veteran has not lost a trial in decades.. The biggest trial in the rookie’s life and yet the rookie comes out on top. How good is that? Where is John Grisham when you need him?
I have a special gator hat that I wear to games. It’s signed by Patric Young. He’s one of my favorites of all time. When we beat Uconn Sunday, at the end of the game, I gave my hat to an eight-year-old boy who was sitting next to me and who cheered his butt off the entire game. He was a huge gator fan. It was like passing the torch. I want that kid to remember how magical that game was. And it made me feel good.
Todd knows San Francisco. This is a comfortable place for him. The team flies out tomorrow morning. He’s got a few tricks up his sleeve for getting his team ready. I love that type of mentality. I think we have an edge. I expect us to beat Maryland. And I don’t think it will be as close as the UConn game.
Losing Kevin Hov to Columbia is a big deal. He spent five years previously at Columbia so I get it. Todd thinks KHov is the best assistant coach in all of America. He was ready for a head coaching job. I am happy for him.
I realize the game on Sunday was stressful. I almost checked myself into the Duke hospital. Please enjoy every damn second of this. It’s been a while! Would you rather be in cardiac arrest or have no pulse at all?
