I've hit up quite a few sources over the last week to compile some of the latest scoop for ITG's Insider Recruiting Report 5/31. If you have any questions to add please feel free to ask.
2017 cornerback on commit watch?
Earlier this spring Miami (Fla.) Southridge cornerback Shawn Davis was planning to visit Florida, but was unable to make the visit due to a team obligation. However, a make up visit is already in the works with the plan being for him to visit June 2-4th with his 2018 teammate Mark Pope. The Gators have come on strong since the spring as the team to beat for the South Florida defender. With the Gators looking to take a heavy load of defensive backs, it’s good to start adding to their arsenal now. His teammate Pope currently has Alabama on top for his services, but will be making his first visit to Gainesville so there is still time for change.
***Tuesday Afternoon Update: There has been an update on Shawn Davis visit plans. His father was not able to get off work for this weekend so they have rescheduled to come back the 11th/12th weekend for the visit.***
Still think there is a very good chance with parents coming for him to pop on the visit.
Notes on Upcoming Visitors
California cornerback Elijah Blades will also be making a visit to Gainesville the weekend of June 4th as well. At this time Arizona, Florida, and Utah are considered the main competitors here, but the Gators have the title of “Dream School” behind it. The Gators have been out to see the 6-foot-3, 170-pounder twice this spring, and the Gators were pleased with what they saw from him on the field. The LA schools like USC and UCLA are recruiting Blades as well, but want to monitor his grades closer before throwing an offer in the mix. He is planning to make a commitment on June 12th, so a positive visit to Gainesville could be all he needs to ease his mind about traveling across the country for his future home. The fact that Blades is making it a point to see UF before his commitment shows that his interest is legitimate.
Another visitor that is planning to be in Gainesville on June 3rd is three-star tight end Alex Marshall. The big-framed tight end’s visit to UF will be his first ever, and he is expecting to land an official offer from the Gators on the visit. Florida State seems to be the schools sticking out to Marshall the most, with Seminoles tight ends coach Tim Brewster leading the charge on their behalf. Marshall is planning to commit on June 12th as well and likely will be choosing FSU unless the Gators can change his mindset while they have him on campus. Marshall will also be visiting FSU while down in the Sunshine state as well the day after his trip to UF.
Two other confirmed visitors over the next few days are athlete commitment Kadarius Toney on June 2nd and Florida’s newest commitment Jordon Scott on June 4th. Accompanying Toney on his visit to Gainesville will be Alabama safety Kendarian Handy-Holly, who also has an offer from the Gators.
The Latest on Offensive Line Commit Telfort
Earlier this spring I noted a possibility that Florida Rivals250 offensive tackle commit Kadeem Telfort won't be a part of this Gators signing class. This was coming off his out of the blue transfer from Norland high school to Booker T. Washington high school as well as a few other things the Gators needed to look into. However, at last check things seem to be on the upward climb for the Gators and their chances of holding onto Telfort seem much more likely. This spring Telfort impressed the Florida staff when they stopped by to see him in action. Though things seem very likely for Telfort to remain in the class, the Gators will still need to continue to fight off others as programs have continued to recruit and offer him.
Two Top Targets Narrow Focus
Rivaks250 offensive tackle Kai Leon Herbert recently named a top six via his social media. Among his list were Auburn, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi State, and Tennessee in no such order. The Gators have been the longtime favorite here, and likely still is the team to beat despite claiming no leaders on his most recent list. Many expected (including me) Herbert to pull this trigger sometime this spring, but he decided to hold out until sometime in the late summer or fall. Michigan is seen as a team to watch going forward, but Miami also is trying to stay in the mix as well.
Rivals100 defensive end Zachary Carter also narrowed down his list of top schools on Friday as well, naming a top four. His list includes Florida, Clemson, Tennessee, and USF, but most people closest to Carter feel that it will really be between Clemson and Florida. The Gators dropped in to see Carter twice this spring, with the most recent visit coming from Chris Rumph last week for Carter’s spring football game. The Gators feel very good about their chances to land Carter in this class, and also feel down the road he will grow more into a defensive tackle. It should also be noted that Carter’s father is a big Gator fan and would love for his son to continue his football career in The Swamp.
Defensive Tackle Breakdown
The Gators landed a commitment along the defensive line earlier this week when Jordon Scott pulled the trigger. The Gators are looking to take a deep class at the defensive tackle position and have quite a few other targets on the board as well. Of those targets there are three we feel the Gators are pursuing the hardest currently.
* Fred Hansard: This Rivals100 big man has yet to visit Gainesville at this time, but is planning to sometime this summer. Rutgers has been mentioned as the team in the best place to land this four-star early on, but his recruitment still seems to be somewhat in it’s early stages, with quite a few campuses left for Hansard to see. The Gators have been pushing Hansard very hard, with Chris Rumph and even Jim McElwain leading the charge. The fact that McElwain is in touch with Hansard shows how highly coveted he is.
* Aubrey Solomon: This Georgia big man visited Gainesville back in January and left claiming the Gators as his leader. Since then Alabama has moved into the front, but Solomon seems to name his most recent visited school as his leader. Florida is pushing hard for the four-star tackle, but seem to have their work cut out for them at this time. It should also be noted that Georgia is very confident they can swing Solomon as well.
* MJ Webb: This four-star Georgia big man also visited UF back in January and left speaking highly of the Gators. The Gators have yet to get Webb back on campus since then, but Auburn and South Carolina have been tripped to frequently. The Gamecocks are the team that seems to have the upper hand as of now.
With only one of the above targets trending positively towards the Gators, the staff has added some new names to the board this spring. Here are a couple names.
- Breyon Gaddy, Dalyn Wade-Perry, Neil Farrell, Alec Jackson, and Romello Martin
Another defensive tackle name could be added to the board soon as three-star Georgia tackle Tyrone Truesdell is planning to visit Florida the weekend of June 4th.
This & That
* While in the Southeast competing in the Rivals Five-star Challenge, California tight end Jimmy Jaggers plans to visit Florida on June 12th through the 13th. The Gators are looking to add another tight end and have been in contact with Jaggers. USC seems like tough competition as of now.
* 2018 wide receiver Warren Thompson visited UF’s campus this past Saturday. The Gators are currently running in second place behind Miami. Florida has turned up their recruiting efforts over the last several months and seem to be trending upward.
