2019 Spring Practice and the O&B Game...

QB is not the only position by far to have players switch to another position.

CB Trey Dean and S John Huggins have moved to the Star position to cover CG-J's E-D to the NFL. Dean's move will also facilitate rsSo CB Marco Wilson's return from his 2018 knee injury.

SS/Star Amari Burney moves to LB to fill VJ's E-D to the NFL

LB David Reese (rsFr) moves to the Buck (OLB/DE) due to his outside speed.

Each guy that has transitioned to a new position seems to be more and more comfortable each and every day and the coaches are satisfied for the most part. They are all still transitioning and can still develop more though.

But the flexibility and versatility these guys bring to these positions is exactly the way the game is changing and head coach Dan Mullen and Grantham are excited for what these guys can do. -- (and so are we) :)

It’s the same guys getting picked on. McWilliams on one side and Davis on the other. Thankfully neither should play that much this year.

We don’t have much CB depth. Elam is going to have to get up to speed quickly. However our WR and TE group is stacked and is going to be a handful for anybody, especially if our QB gets time to throw.

I’m more pleased with the oline. I thought they’d be kinda bad especially with the starting unit split up. But they’ve been pretty good. Thought Forsyth would be bad protecting the blindside but looks like he’s lost weight and is quicker.

Elam will pass these guys easy. I’m ready for Stiner and Davis to sit permanently though, neither cut out for this level. Idk how Stiner started so many games last year. Slow and can’t tackle or cover.

We have weapons all over on offense. When was the last time our offensive skills positions were this good? It’s been awhile for sure

Yep receivers are probably there with anyone in the country. Just have to hope the O line holds up in real play. Not sure how much you can take from today with them. I am curious to watch a video of this and just focus on the O line some.

It will be hard to take anything from the game because of the restrictions placed on the DL and QBs not allowed to be tackled. Hopefully they are as good as they looked in the first half.

My Spring game evaluations are pretty basic, just like the Spring festival was...

"The QB's and the receivers lit up a defense that was so bland that it gave vanilla a bad name. P- 34 completions for 762 yds, 22.4 yds/comp with 8 TD's.

But it was a good time and nobody got injured, which is a huge plus imoho." The RB's didn't get much work, but the young guys got a few good carries, (Pierce & Clement). The ever expanding committee of RB's will be healthy and very solid in the Fall.

While everyone realizes that it was mostly just a 'scripted dog and pony show' to accentuate the offense, the passing game couldn't have gone much better if it had been against 'air' with no defense on the field.

I'm good with the way Dan runs the Spring game,,, it worked out pretty good for (10-3) last season. ;)

If you like playing Duck duck goose lots of grab ass and basically watching 7 on 7 it went very well for 3* Dan :D

* very sparse attendance o_O

You'd be very familiar with what 7-on-7 looks like since that's all they play in that flag football league called the Big 12. Everybody with a pulse drops 40 on your sorry defense.

Actually attendance was really good considering it was a pretty hot Saturday afternoon with kickoff at 1pm.

It was just a spring game but I liked what I saw and where this program is going.

I commented to my better half (with a grin) before half time, that it looked like we were watching a Big12-10-whatever championship game.... :D

Somewhere in the 40-60K range is usual for a Gator Spring game.
There's a lot to do, even on campus, and the local lakes had big crowds, as did both coasts beaches.

I'm betting that SEC Network had a much larger crowd, both live and on record...

Typical Robbie accuracy in his QB critique attempts...

2. Who plays better, Kyle Trask or redshirt freshman Emory Jones? --- The two were pretty even, but what separated them was one very bad decision by Trask, who threw an ill-advised pass in the flat that defensive back John Huggins intercepted and returned 80 yards for a touchdown early in the game.

Other than that, Trask and Jones both played well. Trask threw for 209 yards and 2 TD;'s, while Jones threw for 117 yds and 2 TD's, and also had a 28-yard run.

The competition for the No. 2 spot will carry over to preseason camp. (that much I can agree with)

Trask - 209 Yds, 2 TD's, 1 Int

E.Jones - 117 Yds, 2 TD's, 1 Int
R-38 Yds, long 26 Yds.

I guess RA was on a pee-break when EJ threw his Int.... And EJ's run would have been stopped had the defender (Huggins I believe) not pulled up and let him go. (white shirt QB)

The best QB running the ball by far,,, and it's not even close, was the true Fr Jalon Jones (3 for 63 yds, 21 ypc, long of 34 yds). That kid has 'flowing' speed, kind of like Harvin had. He doesn't look that fast, right up until he blows by you, leaving you in his dust.

As to the OL, they need 5 starters with an additional 3 for the rotation (per Hevesy) to start the season. Between now and Aug 24th, I have no doubt that they will find them. The talent and the numbers are there and Hevesy will develop them.

http://www.gatorsports.com/2019/04/andreus-answers-big-production-game-by-design/

From a Graham Hall article: For now, however, the current OL crop will look to continue improving, as they have throughout their time in Gainesville, according to Franks.“I think they did a great job of stepping up, especially the young guys. On our off day last week, the whole OL group came up here, and they watched the film together when we didn’t have to be here. That’s a hardworking group,” Franks said. “They have so much to learn in so little time that they have to come in here and work mentally and physically. Even on off days.”

Sounds to me like a 'TEAM' is coming together for 2019. iG

The Spring is now over. The next 3 Savage months, then 25 Fall practices will settle out the entire Aug 24th roster.

Gator 'best' at position post Spring,,,(in iG's opinion, nothing more)

DT Campbell
DE Greenard / Carter
BUCK Zuniga (OLB/DE) Moon?
ILB David Reese II
OLB Burney - Houston - Miller
----- the front 7 positions are a bit blurry and shifting in Grantham's 3-4.
Nic/Star Trey Dean
CB Henderson
CB Wilson
FS Safety Brad Stewart
- Taylor
SS Stiner - Lenton - Huggins?
Best 5 in the secondary (per iG) are in bold.

-----
K McPherson
P Townsend
LS Tilghman rsSr 3 Gm's - DioGuardi rsJr ***** - Ortiz rsFr *****
Farr graduated, I'd say that LS is a bit undecided until Fall.
----------
QB Franks
RB Perine
WR-X Jefferson
WR-Z Hammond & Swain KR
WR-Y Grimes
'Human Joystick' WR/RB/PR Toney
TE-H Pitts WR
TE-Y Krull or Gamble
LT Forsythe
LG Heggie
OC Buchanan
RG Bleich or Banks if healthy
RT DeLance

I expect some roster movement or adjustments to happen by Aug 24th, but barring injury, those are guys that should be playing.
