New Story Gasparilla Bowl Preview: Florida Gators vs. Tulane Green Wave

The Florida Gators will finish their 2024 season in Tampa, Florida, taking on the Tulane Green Wave in the Gasparilla Bowl. The Gators are looking to end their season on a four-game winning streak. If Florida wins on Friday, it’ll be the most wins for Florida in a season since 2020.

The Tulane Green Wave has had an excellent season but will be shorthanded in the bowl game. Their star quarterback, Darian Mensah, has entered the Transfer Portal and has already committed to play at Duke next season. Here is the Gasparilla Bowl preview of the Florida Gators versus Tulane Green Wave.

Tulane Green Wave

The Tulane Green Wave will travel to Tampa, Florida, to face the Gators in the Gasparilla Bowl. The Green Wave will be led by their head coach, Jon Sumrall, who’s wrapping up his first season as the head coach for Tulane.

The Tulane offense will be led by their backup quarterback, Ty Thompson. With Mensah leaving the program, the former five-star quarterback will make his first start of the season. Thompson has completed six out of eleven passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns. He has also rushed for 243 yards and six touchdowns.

Redshirt sophomore running back Makhi Hughes is one of the best-returning backs in college football. The First Team All-AAC player had a monster season for the Green Wave. Hughes rushed for 1,372 yards on 257 carries and fifteen touchdowns. He also has 19 receptions for 176 receiving yards and two scores.

The Tulane defense will be challenged by Florida’s balanced attack on offense. The Green Wave defense is led by their redshirt senior linebacker, Tyler Grubbs. The former Louisiana Tech transfer leads Tulane’s defense in tackles with 59 total tackles. Grubbs also has six tackles for loss, three sacks, and two interceptions. Two other Tulane Green Wave players to watch are wide receiver Mario Williams and defensive tackle Patrick Jenkins.

Florida Gators

The Florida Gators are coming into this game looking to finish their 2024 season on a high note. The Gators will have most of their starters available for the game, including those who will be entering the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Florida Gators offense will be led by true freshman quarterback DJ Lagway. The Lone Star State native was recently named to the True Freshman All-American Team on PFF. Lagway has completed 59.2% of his passes for 1,610 yards with eleven touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Senior wide receiver Elijhah Badger will play in the final game of his collegiate career before heading to the NFL. Badger is the leading receiver for the Gators. The Arizona State transfer has 39 receptions for 789 yards and a team-high four touchdowns.

The Florida defense has played a “bend, don’t break” defense for the last couple of games of the season, and has worked out very well. Redshirt junior EDGE rusher Tyreak Sapp is one of the stars on Florida’s defense. Sapp has 44 total tackles on the season and leads Florida’s defense in tackles for loss with thirteen and sacks with seven. Two other Gators to watch in the Gasparilla Bowl are running back Montrell Johnson and defense tackle Caleb Banks.

New Story A&M Grits Notes [Update 1/7/2025, this take didn't age well at all LOL]

I had notes about the game but deleted most of them because they weren’t important anymore. Still, I did keep these…

Hindsight being 20/20, we should’ve made Bateman the DC instead of hiring Armstrong. In foresight, that probably would’ve only been for 2 years before his job was in jeopardy.

I stay away from absolute statements, but we do not have a single interior DL worthy of starting in the SEC.

After such a phenomenal spring game, Jaden Baugh has what, a dozen carries in three games?

On to the headline…

I wish Billy Napier nothing but the best, I have ZERO ill will towards him. I believe that he poured all of his heart and his will into trying to make us a better football team. I believe he gave 100%. I respect anyone who pours everything he has out for my Gators. But it wasn’t good enough and now he’s done.

I’m also angry at Billy because, had he been willing to try some things differently, this could’ve worked really well. But he didn’t and it hasn’t. It’s over and it’s nobody’s fault but his. He saw what was happening and stubbornly trusted his process to work out in the end and refused to relinquish control. So long Billy, thanks for the upgrade in infrastructure.

One of the most entertaining things about the run up to a new coach is seeing the names that don’t have a chance in hell of being hired here. Most people are just speculating but it’s funny because others are the same ones who were screaming about hiring a G5 coach last time but then they’ll post “What about [insert name here ]?” who is also from the G5 or some lower division.

There’s going to be a lot of information being thrown around, we’re going to see a lot of posts about “I know someone who knows someone who knows someone…”. Nobody, outside of a very close few at the top, know who they’re talking to, and who it is. Still, speculation and rumors are the heartbeat of the message board community.

You know who the real winner is here? Rivals. During a coaching search the clicks go orbital.

New Story Kennedy Martin Named AVCA First Team All-American

The sophomore earns Florida's only All-American honor for the second-consecutive season.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -
Florida volleyball's Kennedy Martin was named a First-Team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Wednesday. The opposite hitter earned her second All-American award of her career, adding to the Second-Team honor she received following her 2023 freshman campaign.

The Fort Mill, SC native etched her name in the program's record books in multiple categories. Her 33 kills in Florida's Second Round of the NCAA Tournament against No. 4/12 Kansas on Dec. 7 added to her program record - 32 kills - that she had previously set twice. Additionally, her 33 kills mark the most kills during an NCAA Tournament match by a Gator. Throughout the regular season, Martin recorded 31 kills three times during a four-set match, which marks the most kills recorded by a Florida player in four sets during the 25-point rally scoring era (2008-present).

Martin made a historic comeback after missing seven matches in the beginning of the season due to an ankle injury. Playing in just 79 percent of Florida's 117 sets, she currently ranks first in the nation for points per set (6.28) and second for kills for set (5.57).

A six-rotation player, the sophomore recorded her 1,000th-career kill in just 53 matches to become the fastest Gator to reach the milestone. Furthermore, she has recorded double-digit kills in every collegiate match played wearing the Orange and Blue.

49 Gators have combined for 141 All-Americans, with Martin earning the last two honors for Florida. Her First-Team award is the highest by a Gator since Rhamat Alhassan made First-Team in 2017.
