Before that, there was a growing crossover in the south of democrats voting republican as the democratic party grew more liberal, colorblind, and tolerant. If you knew anything about American political history, you would know all that. As for Robert Byrd, he was a politician. He looked at what was best for him to remain elected and did and said what he needed to. Must have worked, he was a senator for over 50 years.
