Shane Matthews Named 2023 SEC Football Legend

The Gator Great will be honored from Dec. 1-2 at the 2023 SEC Football “Weekend of Champions”.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gator Great Shane Matthews has been selected to the 2023 SEC Football Legends class, the Southeastern Conference announced Thursday.

The 2023 Football Legends Class includes 14 former stars who excelled on the football field and helped write the history of the sport at each of the respective SEC institutions.

Matthews was a two time SEC Player of the Year in 1990 and 1991, lettering three years at quarterback for Florida (1900-92). He also finished his career as a three-time selection as All-SEC quarterback, second-team All-American in 1991 and a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Throughout his career Matthews totaled statistics that place him at or near the top of numerous categories in the Gators’ record book, completing more than 700 passes for over 9,000 yards and 74 touchdowns. Additionally, he led the Gators to a 28-8 record over his three year career.

After graduating from Florida in 1992, Matthews played quarterback in the NFL for 14 seasons with six different teams, including two stints with the Chicago Bears. Over the course of his NFL career, Matthews totaled nearly 500 completions for 4756 yards and 24 touchdowns.

He was inducted into the UF Athletic Hall of fame in 2002.

The entire SEC Football Legends class will be honored at the 2023 SEC Football “Weekend of Champions” December 1-2 in Atlanta, Georgia, highlighted by the annual SEC Legends Celebration on Friday, December 1 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. The group will also be recognized prior to the SEC Football Championship Game, which will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, December 2.
