Top 5% of earners (which California is also driving away) pay 70%. Middle class pays the rest. “All” was an exaggeration, clearly. 30% is quite a bit. California cannot continue to sustain this downturn. Yes I understand that their economy is 5th largest in the world. Now. People are leaving in droves. Including the 5% that pays for the 70%. Tourism is a major driving market in California. That is down as well. Continue to downplay these real issues and see where you are in 10 years. As more people leave, that increases the taxes for those remaining. Which in turn will drive more people away. Net loss of 342,000 people in 2022. People don’t want to live in your state. Period.
50k earners are net takers they don’t pay for crap. The load is carried by high ordinary income earners. It’s worse at the federal level, especially after trumps ludicrous tax code passed.
Florida runs on property taxes and sales taxes. 50k a year earners don’t pay a whole lot of either.

Our property taxes are low. Actually Texas had high property taxes and I should know because we lived in a Dallas suburb for twenty years.
Hotel room taxes from tourism pays a good bit.
