Per Miami Herald https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/college/acc/university-of-miami/article225034525.html Feb 21, 2019

Per Miami Herald (same article)
"Diaz HC/UM - our team isn't far from competing for championships."

"...Jaelan Phillips, the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2017 and a former UCLA Bruins defensive end, is transferring to Miami."

Per ESPN http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...linebacker-jaelan-phillips-transferring-miami Feb 22, 2019
"... Phillips, who was rated by ESPN as the nation's No. 3 overall prospect in the 2017 recruiting class, medically retired in December after two injury-plagued seasons with the Bruins.

He played in just 11 games, starting in six, and finished his UCLA career with 41 tackles, including eight for loss and 4.5 sacks. A concussion ended his 2018 season after four games."

Phillips, per the transfer portal, is still pending appeal.

Other transfers
Per ESPN (same article) - "...Phillips joins a host of recent transfers for the Canes, including -

UCLA DT Chigozie Nnoruka (Rivals 2* now listed at 6'1" 294 formerly listed at 6'3" 260
) clearance unknown

Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell (5'11" 203 Rivals 4*. As of 3/7/19 Pending appeal/waiver to play in 2019 https://n.rivals.com/news/rival-views-should-martell-be-no-1--1 )
and

USC safety Bubba Bolden (6'3" 183 Rivals 4*
cleared to play 2019 stuff done on the left coast doesn't count)

OTOH - "...Well, he was supposed to be our starting Safety and it sounds like something serious happened between he and another student that may not just get him kicked off the team, but potentially out of school." https://forums.rivals.com/threads/bubba-bolden-likely-done-at-usc.836362/

"Chris Swanson of USC247 is reporting that Bubba Bolden is facing a two-year suspension from the Trojans." https://thespun.com/pac-12/usc/bubba-bolden-suspension-details-report

Other transfers
"...Phillips will join other recently announced transfers who should lift the Hurricanes a major notch in talent level:
defensive end Trevon Hill (Virginia Tech 6'5" 228 3* cleared for 2019),
running back Asa Martin (Auburn 5'11.5" 200 4* pending appeal),
wide receiver K.J. Osborn (Buffalo 6'0" 205 4* cleared for 2019),
offensive tackle Tommy Kennedy (FCS Butler 6'5" 285 3* unknown) and
junior college punter Louis Hedley (College of San Francisco) not listed

Not sure of these statements; didn't take the time to check them out.

Phillips, Martell, Osborn, Martin and Kennedy all rank in the top 50 of the 247Sports.com transfer rankings (https://247sports.com/Season/2019-Football/TransferPortal/ ), and Phillips leads the group as the No. 3 player in the rankings."

As Gators, we know what it is like to agonize over transfer approval. No one knows what will happen with these Cane transfers.

My only comment on these transfers is...

They are not doing it as they are starting for their current team or I’m not to worried about them.

About the same thought. It is interesting to see wholesale free agency in college ball, at least comparative to its past. I do think it's possible to pick up 3-4 quality guys per year now. It's almost like a 2nd mini-recruiting class.

That said - you have to be weary of guys and their reasons they are transferring. I'd be worried about that UCLA kid - but if you are taking a 5th year senior who is working on a masters...that's your guy imo.

They will get big time help from 2 of those guys. That DE from VT and that WR are the real deal especially the DE. Phillips from UCLA won't play due to recovering from his injuries. That WR will do decent I think also.

The OT which would help them get their O line straight with people playing their natural position is a big unknown. I looked at some film and he does have real good foot movement in pass protection but he doesn't look that strong considering the level he is playing at. Oklahoma and Texas were trying to get him to sign also so maybe he is decent but I am not 100% convinced he is good starter material in Power 5 football.

As far as the UCLA guy we went after also he is standard starter material inside. He fits Miami's scheme alright and had a decent 2017 season before they changed the defense at UCLA in 2018.

These transfers are why I think a blowout in this game is not a sure thing. Especially if that OT works out this team isn't that bad on paper.

Again, they are transferring for a REASON and if they were quality players they’d be starters and not unhappy.

We will destroy Miami. Their fans are overconfident with no reason to be. They sucked out loud last year and nearly lost to Taggert. An unproven, overrated new coach isn’t going to change that with a bunch of players not good enough to play elsewhere.

Think that if you want. The DE is transferring because he is a problem and was kicked off the team but can play when he is on the field and will be getting after the QB and If our new tackles aren't top notch in pass protection he will eat them up. Miami will keep him eligible also for our game short of him robbing someone with a gun.

The receiver isn't an attitude problem - he is just a good player and wants to play Power 5 football - probably for the pro scouts. We tried to get the other D linemen for depth.
