Everybody seems to want to put UF in the Peach Bowl and LSU in the Fiesta. I don't get this. Same record, we beat them, we are ranked ahead of them. We haven't been to a big bowl in years, the fans will flock to Tempe.

BUT...here's the scenario nobody is mentioning: if Georgia beats Bama and they both get in, the next highest ranked SEC team gets the Sugar. Guess who that is?

(Playing against the Big 12 champ, and neither Texas or Oklahomo scares me one bit.)

Your premise if Georgia beats Bama ..rolling that one around my crimson and clover. I agree I’d love to go West. Never been to the Fiesta Bowl.

Yes, it's Wiki, but pretty sure it's right.

Bowl game conference tie-ins[edit]
The following bowls have tie-ins with the following conference champions in the years they are not hosting playoff semifinals.

  • Rose Bowl: Big Ten vs. Pac-12
  • Sugar Bowl: SEC vs. Big 12
  • Orange Bowl: ACC
When the conference champion is unavailable, the bowls invite the next-best team from that conference. The Cotton, Fiesta and Peach Bowls have no conference tie-ins; as such, the best team from the Group of Five ends up in one of those bowls if it doesn't end up in a playoff semifinal.

You realize that Peach and Cotton bowls are now elevated to same status as Fiesta and others right? Playoffs era created the NY6 as somewhat equal footing, rotating playoffs games. Doesn't matter to me whether it's Peach or Fiesta as I'm more interested in the matchup opponent.

Really don't want to go to a NEW YEARS SIX game played DECEMBER 29TH.

Yeah the knock against our fan base is how we don't travel outside our region. I live out here in Arizona so I would love for them to come out here. Heck I would love to get a Gator travel party together for any of you who made the trip.

I remember the '06 BCS Title game against the Buckeyes, that stadium was like 75 percent Bucknuts. Now they all went home by half but you get my point. By merit alone I think Florida should get consideration over LSU but not Georgia. LSU was number two in the west, we were third in the east, but our playoff ranking is higher so what takes precedent for bowl selections?

One article I read seemed to imply if Michigan wasn't in the Rose Bowl we would get them in the Peach Bowl because were ranked just in front of LSU. I think the committee pretty much makes the decision with these open slots now but I am sure there is some discussion with the bowls themselves.

Most predictions with no upsets seem to show us in the Peach Bowl against either Michigan (most of them) or UCF.

I think if either Bowl could pick their choices the order would start with Michigan.

Might be hard to avoid that Michigan game without an upset of Bama, OSU or Oklahoma. I doubt they flip OSU over Oklahoma without a Texas win or a close game there and OSU really pounding Northwestern.

I don't think conference position matters with open slots and they just take the highest ranked CFP team available in those conference tie-in bowls if the champion is in the playoff.

A lot of these predictions are failing to take into account that WV could end up ranked just above Texas and get that Sugar Bowl slot over Texas if Oklahoma wins the Big 12 and makes the playoff. Not sure how the committee politics will play there with WV not making up that cancelled NC State game and them having the choice to take Texas.

We were tied for second in the East.

Last year the Peach Bowl & Fiesta Bowls both paid the participating teams $4 million each. The Peach has been elevated to the same status as the Fiesta, even though played before Jan. 1. Think about this, though. If Georgia beats Alabama and both teams go to the playoffs, Florida would go to the Sugar Bowl as the highest ranked available SEC team. They would face Oklahoma. Does anybody want that match-up? And if Ohio State gets in the playoffs, Michigan would go to the Rose Bowl as the highest ranked available Big 10 team. That would leave Florida's Peach Bowl opponent up in the air, probably between West Virginia, Penn St. or Texas. UCF has to beat Memphis to get a major bowl and since they went to the Peach last year, even if they win they may end up in the Fiesta vs. Washington St. I think a UCF/UF match-up would be pretty compelling, though. But if Ohio State doesn't get into the playoffs, Michigan is the most likely Gator opponent IMO.

There is no difference between the Peach Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl status wise.

It would almost be a home game for UF if we play in ATL.

And I'm not scared of a Sugar Bowl matchup vs Oklahoma. I'm not scared of a Peach matchup vs Michigan. We may finally beat Michigan. If we don't, it won't effect our next Season. Hell we lost to them in 07 and how did our 08 season turnout?

And I don't think a win over Iowa in the Gator or Citrus bowl elevate our recruiting over a loss to Oklahoma or such? Both can be built on. Did beating Iowa in the Outback Bowl during Sharkie's 2nd season elevate UF to great heights?

I want the Peach.

12/29 is a Saturday and 1/1 is a Tuesday so better for work and travel schedule to go to a Saturday bowl game. And the playoff games are the night of 12/29 so the Peach Bowl will be on before them as a nice appetizer. So half of the NY6 bowl games are on 12/29, Peach, Cotton, and Orange all that day.

Exactly. It is a day dedicated to basically the biggest day of college football...vs a game on a work day that people will kind of be tired of watching football and resting up for the title game.

Agree with all that but WV won't be getting in unless they choose them over Texas in the CFP rankings for the Sugar Bowl. Texas or WV wont be getting anything but the Sugar Bowl.

I knew there were at large selections and that one of the New Years Six were obligated to pick the highest rated member of the group of five if they were top 15 ( I think). At least that was how I understood it a few years ago.

I think they are obligated to give the highest ranked champion of the non-Power 5 schools a slot now whether top 15 or not and the other non-playoff choices go by their final rankings except for the slots that certain conferences have to fill and they take the highest available in those cases where the champion is in the playoff.

Would LOVE to play OU. We would be their best opponent this year, we have a better pass rush than they have seen. Would they score? Sure. We don't have the 08 defense. But their defense is horrid, we will score 40 on them and control the clock and game.

ZERO fear of playing Oklahoma.

I think they would throw all over us.

Probably LSU - UCF in the Fiesta and UF - Michigan in the Peach if nothing crazy tonight.

I think the bowls have better attendance if LSU and Michigan play and keep the Florida teams playing closer to home in a “rivalry.” I know the bowls don’t like to have a team play in a game twice but money rules. Michigan and LSU travel better than Florida and UCF.

Like you said Peach isn’t going to want UCF 2 years in a row

TX will not be in top 12. So I am guessing no Big 12 in Sugar.

After today I am guessing Peach,

Against MI, Penn State or UCF.

Would prefer Penn State. Played MI twice recently, UCF too annoying. Fan base small but awful. Saw them flipping off players today. It happens a lot yes but that is their peak. All three of them will take game very seriously.

Isn't Atlanta better for Florida? Or is the novelty of Glendale and the Phoenix area a bigger draw for Gatir alums? Seriously.

Do predict OU goes to playoff over OSU, Georgia and UCF.

I won't be surprised if Ohio State jumps Oklahoma for the 4th spot. And personally I hope we do play UCF in the Peach. It would be an interesting storyline and I think a lot of people would go to the game. Michigan just has no intrigue for me.

If talking heads are to be believed they won't let UCF go there 2 years straight. I also think they believe LSU would probably bring a few more people out there (Fiesta) than we would while Michigan would bring a lot of people to Georgia in addition to us.

I doubt they would have them jump Oklahoma but if they did the 4 teams in those 2 bowls would be UF, UCF, LSU and Penn State. We would probably play Penn State in the peach in that scenario.

One thing is fact - we'll have all the answer just after Noon today. It's just nice to have the Gators part of the conversation about major bowls.

Playoff top 4

Bama
Clemson
ND
OU

Georgia to the sugar
LSU to the peach
UF/UCF in the fiesta
