Remember how excited we were when the University was finally committing to putting funds into the program needed to turn it around?
You simply cannot just throw a ton of money at something and expect results. The UF admin has given Billy more money than any coach in history and lets just take a look at the two most important hires he has made. OC- Do we even have one? Of course we do and it's Billy. Why is he still the OC? Well because he "enjoys it". DC- 2019 UGA Quality Control, 2020 Lousiana LB coach, 2021-2022 Southern Miss DC/LB coach. 2023 UF DC.
Why would we seriously have had high expectations for this season when you look deep into this staff? HC has proven to have no clue what he is doing on gameday. We still called a timeout after a dead ball against Miami. OC, He has failed at every stop doing this. He begged for the position at Bama for years and was put off. Fired at Clemson and only one year at ASU. There is ABSOLUTELY NOT REASON he should have ever been allowed to be the OC. None. The fact that he was and was given the contract he was is amazing and possibly a sign that we literally had no other options to be HC, which is terrifying with another new hire looming.
We have given this guy more money than anyone in history to hire a bunch of buddies and admin from LOUISIANA! How can an AD see this happening and not step in and say something? We are fans, fans in general have a way of pissing their pants and thinking its nice to feel warm. A true sense of how of to judge a hire is how people on the outside feel about it. They aren't blinded by fandom. No one was impressed. Most laughed and mocked the hires. We had a strength coach get one good look at this program and say peace out after maybe a month.
There two scenarios and both could be true. 1) Billy is flat out stealing money and hiring his buddies. 2) No one wants to work for him.
We seen much much lesser schools hiring highly successful coordinators while we play fiddle sticks with unproven guys. Why is this happening constantly? What is going on at this University to cause this from HC to OC to DC and beyond? Are we the smartest guy in the room? Or is it something much deeper? It can't be money.
All of these things were obvious serious issues that everyone should have realized at the time they were done but chose HOPE instead of logic. What do we do now? We all talk about Lane but outside of him having a Spurrier-like ego, why would he come? Literally every fan I talk to says the next hire has to be someone who has proven themselves. I have no idea who in the hell that could possibly be and why they would come. "We are UF" is no longer a sufficient answer and neither is we will pay him (everyone can now).
I've never felt more hopeless about this program and after last year, that says a lot. We are literally at a point where the only legit man who could excite this program and turn it around is likely to lead his team to the playoffs in Oxford. Can we get him to rent a Uhaul at 2am like he did in Tenn? I would drive it. Thats also about the only way SS could avoid not calling a realtor soon.
