Billy must believe he can contribute, or at least add depth

its obvious Billy wants depth on the lines

Now time to get Diabate back and Elam to stay

Summerall is likely just depth. I don’t see him contributing much but who knows. We will see.

Let’s be honest. I would say Rick Wells really didn’t contribute too much. This was his 6th year.
Paco,

If talking ONLY about football, Agree, but he stuck around & he did contribute; something which surprised everyone.

I would certainly take him over Copeland as a true Gator since Wells stuck it out and appeared to be a team player, etc.

I think it is better if Elam goes to keep up our first round NFL draft placement streak.
I want what's best for the kid. If he's a top 10 guy, no brainer to go. If he's 2nd round grade, come back and try to elevate it. The one thing that does not matter in this equation is "first round draft placement streak".

I remember back in the day, UF was mediocre but had a long streak of 1st round picks. Then we started winning championships but lost the streak, and nobody cared. Trust me when I say, the only time something like that matters is when you have nothing else. I never want that sort of thing to be relevant to us again.

Wells made a lot of immature decisions early in his Gator career that got him in the doghouse and cost him playing time and quicker development. Not too long after arriving on campus in 2016 he got arrested for shooting an airsoft (BB) gun in the dorms. He redshirted that year. Then he was one of 9 Gators caught in the fraudulent credit card mess and was suspended for the entire 2017 season? In 2018 he was with a group that got in an altercation with a Gainesville gambler and lied to police about it. And he had a couple of other game-day suspensions for undisclosed reasons. But I give the kid credit for hanging in there, not transferring out like so many do now, staying loyal to the university and the team, earning his degree and contributing when given the opportunity. Best of luck with his life wherever it leads. None of us is perfect and some have their dirty laundry aired for all to see. It's the choices we make after messing up that define us and it seems Rick Wells is on the right path.

Ocala,

Had forgotten about all that, but you're right about how things are shaping up for him now; hope it continues !

Zanders, known then as Dante Lang, had an exceptional HS career as a DE.

1st 3 years playing at DE, he recorded 52 tackles, 10 sacks, and 11 tackles for loss, moved to TE as a Senior.

In one of his classic screwups, Mullen moved him to TE for "depth purposes" & screwed him over royally.

This is someone who the extra year of Covid eligibility could help !

Glad he came back !

Now time to get Diabate back and Elam to stay
Michi,

Saw this comment on https://sportspac12.com/newsfeed/ & thought to post it -

"...Utah emerges as leader for Florida linebacker transfer Mohamoud Diabate ."

Also, from Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports, keep an eye on the Utah Utes as a potential destination for the talented linebacker:

In 2021, Diabate recorded 89 tackles (2.5 for a loss). That led the Gators, 1 ahead of Trey Dean and 2 ahead of Rashad Torrence.

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/f...ges-for-florida-transfer-lb-mohamoud-diabate/

Don't know how accurate it may be; but facing Diabate as part of Utah's defense in our first game would truly suck !

One hope; Diabate from Auburn Alabama; Utah a long way from home !

According to David Rosenberg, Diabate did enter with the intention of keeping all options open. With no solid leads, Florida could get one of its top linebackers back.

Hoping Napier can keep him.

The page has turned and with Florida beginning classes for the Spring Semester on Wednesday, the Gators held their first official team meeting of the 2022 season on Tuesday afternoon.

Inside the Gators has tidbits from the meeting.

Earlier today, though he is in the transfer portal, Mohamoud Diabate was seen at the stadium. However, I was told that he was there to get some of his belongings and wasn't at the team meeting.

EDIT
"...Florida linebacker Mohamoud Diabate has made a decision after entering the NCAA transfer portal back on Dec. 10.

On Tuesday, Diabate announced that he will be leaving Florida to head to Utah. His departure is a significant depth blow to the Gators, who have seen a number of players depart via the NCAA transfer portal since the season began."

Though it was reported that Emory Jones was leaving, he never entered the transfer portal and I was told that he was at the team meeting.

After the meeting, there was a team dinner.

More info as I hear it.

Update: Though he hasn't officially declared for the NFL draft, I was told that Kaiir Elam wasn't at the meeting.

The first workouts under the new strength and conditioning staff will begin Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. It will not be full team workouts, they will be broken down into groups.

What the heck is Jones doing? Crazy not to try and get a Spring in at another school.
Might be close to his degree?
Might want to see how he stacks up against others at Spring practice, then a portal out or a change of position if it looks like he won't be the starter at QB.
He's been a good student/athlete at UF so far, so good luck to him either way....

He graduates in the spring and can get a UF degree. He transfers now and he doesn’t get it. He will likely transfer after the spring would be my guess. Probably a smart decision to go ahead and get that UF degree if your that close.
