Curious...do you guys have one? I would have expected someone to talk to Callaway the first time he tried to field a punt inside the 10. The second time, I would have expected to see some other returner in there.

Very weird situation. I have been watching football for 40 years. I don't think I have ever seen anything like that before.

It wasn't inside the 10 it was inside the three. On the second one, Callaway looked like a damn Premier Leage goalie, fighting to keep that ball from going into the end zone.

I dont think we need to fire anyone, let alone Mac. Calloway needs to ride the pine on special teams awhile, though. Needs to learn to put his heels on the 10. Beyond that is LAVA and WILL KILL YOU!

Goes without saying. Beyond that, after dodging the fumble at the beginning of the game, why wasn't this REPEATED at halftime? For one thing, why put your best offensive player on the team at risk when receiving a punt on a short field? Risk/reward is stupid at best. You definitely want Callaway on the return team when the other team is punting out of their end zone. But pooch punts with your back to the goalline with really nothing to gain? Piss poor coaching. Sad when Butch outcoaches you. Sad.

Our special teams coach is Nord. The guy who apparently doesn't really recruit by most accounts and apparently also doesn't coach a unit to any type of respectability.

I do not understand keeping him on. Special teams were horrid last year and aare bad this year.

Callaway is by far the worst coached PR we have ever had. He makes the same mistakes over and over and over. He will not field a punt in front of him, allowing it to bounce and usually goes another 10 to 15 yards. He consistently calls for fair catches inside the ten. Three in last night's game alone. The KO return team has gotten a little bit better. They no long run kick returns out of the end zone, like thy consistently did last year.

There is no coaching at all.

I have a few friends that are part of the Gainesville media. I am going to ask them to ask Mac what is going on there.

Isn't he besties with Mac? That's probably the reason. We used to have exciting special teams u this. Blocked punts and kicks, well coordinated returns, etc. Watching our punt teams were just as exciting as our offense and defense. Now we can't get a return out past the 20 and don't even cause breakdowns anymore. We're the ones breaking down.

From middle school up every punt returner in the nation is told to put your heals on the 10 and never back up. I've said this for years now dating back to the Muschamp days...until we kid quality character kids in this program that do not have the atittude that they can do whatever they want, unselfish kids that do not have an entitlement attitude (see bowl game last year), and leadership that gets these young men to understand that talking trash on twitter is what losers and pretenders do, we wont win on a national level. Championship coaches, players, and programs do not act like our team has been acting going on 6 years now. We have no discipline and are more concerned w trash talking and getting personal fouls than with knowing assignments and playing the game right. Until the character of our players greatly improves we are barely a top 25 team.

Yep you need to have talent like we had in 06 and 08 to get away with stuff like that.

If the opposing team is punting inside the two 40 yard lines. The special teams coach always has to go to the punt returner and say; "step on the 10 yard line and do not move back. Let every ball in the air go over your head. Never move back."

Every time

Our coach has not done that once. Not once. Never mind that one would think our PRs could figure that out on their own, after one mistake. Apparently not.

Time for a change.

how many motion penalties? I remember three, plus a delay of game....adding to the PR miscues inside the 10.....I have watched bad high school ball and never remember seeing what I saw in Tennessee on Sat. I would not have let the ST coach back on the bus. He would have received the Kiffin treatment.

No, I don't believe we do.

Agreed. just like most of you guys feel about your DC

I think Mac said they are clearly told not to move back from the 8 yard line.
He did say that. Which is why I wonder why Callaway has not been relieved of his punt return duties.

Either way, poor coaching.

Other than getting a good FG kicker, it does not appear as if special team play is very important to McElwain and his staff.

All I can say is special teams was frustrating... frustrating as hell.

Keep Callaway as the short field returner. Put someone else as the long field returner. One you can trust. One who will listen.

Their problem is he's easily the most explosive offensive player and it's one way to get cheap points. Idk who else they'd put back there who can house one, nobody else has shown the same kind of explosiveness. So they have to live with it.

In 2016, Callaway is ranked #71 in average yardage per punt return
In 2015, Callawy was ranked #6 in average yardage per punt return

He has dropped off in the first four games of this year

Those stats do not include fair catches, inside the 10 or otherwise. Those stats do not include punts allowed to drop and roll in front of the punt returner.

The guy IS explosive. I love him as a receiver. But he is also a liability on punt returns.

Heck you never know until you try someone else. Tyrie, Scarlett, Perine, Chauncy, or Powell can't do worse.

And I'm talking after the opposing team reaches the 40. Anything behind that, let Callaway return the punts.

Seems like he's pressing, he's too indecisive back there so far. Could be rust considering he didn't practice all off-season before fall, idk. But he's just one of the problems with out special teams, it all stinks cept Pineiro.

Scarlett and Powell have incosistent hands IMO. Tyrie has deep speed but doesn't seem to have much wiggle which you need to make that first guy miss. But to your point it can't hurt to try. I'd like to see Gardner on kick returns, fastest guy on the team I think. We can't hit the seam there for nothing now, too slow.

Yep. I will say this again; this coaching staff does not seem to really care about special teams, other than having a good FG kicker.

Bonehead for sure, but my guess is he wanted desperately to make a big play and change mo......I hated the stupid false starts on the punt team...
