There were 3 players that I have noticed having a few questionable plays in pass protection while rewatching part of this game. Ivey, Jordan, and especially Johnson. Hats off to Sharpe, Dillard, and Taylor. Great game you 3.
Now Ivey's questionable plays only came on inside linebacker blitzes. He did a good job of making sure the inside man was covered, but after he realized Dillard had him covered he was too slow to get back to the LB blitzing for the QB. However,...
Most of the time the RB should be there to help out. However, it grew quit obvious Cronkrite is not that trusted in pass protection. He had to be out for a pass twice as often as he was in protection. UMASS caught onto this and blitzed incredibly often. Most of the time 2 defenders leaving the OL outnumbered.
That is one of the biggest reasons our OL looked iffy in pass protection and why Del Rio had so many questionable throws. When he had a clean pocket he nearly always threw a dime.
So I forgive Ivey. Especially since he did the best job in run blocking.
However, Jordan's 2-4 questionable plays were simply because he got beat.
Johnson's several questionable plays were for the same reason.
I admit I was a little harsh about Johnson in other threads. Not as bad as I thought, but there is a humungous difference so far in his film and Taylor's. Not even a contest in pass protection. Taylor actually looked really really good.
Overall, I tip my hat to UMASS. There were so many plays where they brought 6 and we only had our 5 OL blocking (all did well), but our RB was still running his route with his head not turned around when the 6th unblocked man forced Rio to throw the ball away.
This will be obvious on film and you can expect it to mean more plays for Scarlett who did the best job in pass pro, and I have yet to catch a blitz where he is not back stone walling it. Appears to have better timing when he goes out for a pass.
That combined with Taylor taking over at RT you can expect a far better pass protection performance next week. Because when Taylor and Scarlett were both in I was actually quit impressed with both pass and run blocking.
