What were his defenses like at UF? I heard Randy was a pretty good recruiter. I saw UF was ranked #72 scored against defense. Josh Heupel Missouri OC named new Head Coach so we took 2 SEC coaches. Bell named new DB coach at UCF as well

Good luck. I think Heupel is a decent hire for you guys. Both Bell and Shannon were fired and not kept by Mullen. With that being said Shannon is not a good DC at all. And he’s just an average recruiter as well. He has tons of connections in Miami but he doesn’t really want to fight for anybody.

Bell was just here 1 year so really don’t have a good or bad opinion on him.

Looks like a pretty strong rebound for them considering where they are and what they are losing in Frost.

You guys keep hiring Big 12 QBs who won National Titles. Frost in '97 at Nebraska and now Heupel in '00 with Oklahoma.

Seriously Shannon is well respected, at times he was the only coach worth his pay. Great hire for UCF.

Good going UCF. Shannon will help tremendously with recruiting and UCF didn't waste anytime hiring an up & coming offensive mind in Heupel.

Shannon is a great LB coach. HC or even DC, not so much imo...
Decent recruiter in his 'home' area.
But a Great recruiter can recruit anywhere, not just in his home area.

Bell is a decent coach imo.

Both were very good hires for a 2nd tier commuter school like UCF... ;)

I think the game has passed Shannon up a little bit.

For sure.

Going into this year, he hadn’t called a game in a decade or so.

Sure he’s been around it, but it was evident that he hasn’t been able to adapt to the vast changes in offense.

Think about this: before this year, the last time he called plays, the spread option offense was getting popular but still proving itself and the up temp heavy pass schemes were still mostly reserved to a few big12 schools and a bunch of lower tier programs.

Those offenses are the staple of football now.

He made his name and living off most of his opponents running some variation of a pro set.

Hell, even the pistol was in its fledgling days and it’s been so long that the pistol is being schemes against to death now.

Not going to argue any of this, but considering the level of competition UCF faces, I think he will do ok.

Yep! Why I never wanted him. And his defenses were conservative back then even against proset offenses. The talent they had back then was just so sick it didn't matter.

Frost is off THAT team? The greatest Nebraska team in history that won a MNC by ass raping us on National television?

F*ck that dude he didn't deserve to be a coach at Florida. :p

Yeah that split was what brought about the BCS. You know the system that was supposed to stop the controversy? LSU and USC split in '03 . The first BCS national championship was a year or two after the Nebraska/Michigan fiasco.

Tennessee beat FSU in the Fiesta Bowl to claim the title.

It happened the next year. And the split title only happened because the AP broke ranks and decided to name USC the champ instead of LSU, who actually won the BCS title.

Was the AP contractually obligated to vote the BCS #1? I have heard conflicting reports that they went rogue and then that they were within their rights to name USC#1.

I believe so. They used to be part of the BCS and then after that, they no longer were.

I think.

It’s been a long time. But that was the whole point. To have the coaches and ap polls obligated to vote the BCS winner as #1.

I know the ap poll is generally seen as the real poll during the season as opposed to the coaches but if they deviated from what they themselves agreed to do I don't even know where to begin tearing apart their credentials.

College football is unlike any other major sporting event in how there is never been a NCAA championship in the big division( I don't know what division one is called). They have bowl games with little meaning other than sponsors. You have teams retroactively claiming titles and too many split champions. Its kind of like boxing.

I have a headache now thinking about it.

Randy runs a pretty dated defense that relies on an excellent front four to get pressure. In an age where college defenses are implementing NFL-like complex schemes and blitz packages, Randy mostly plays a very simple style. A lot of cover 2 and minimal blitzing. The problem with this approach is the opposing offense is almost never confused and if you don't have great talent on the d-line, the opposing team will have all day to throw.
