QB Controversy?

If not we should !

In the thread Owls vs Gators; LG89 said it well -

"Everybody's favorite player is always the backup QB.

There is a lot more to this than a quarter of good play in a game already decided.

Having said that, if Jones continues to struggle and Richardson keeps lighting it up, eventually he will force his way into the starting role."

Continuing competation between our two best QBs certainly something to look forward to !

We should. Just think Richardson has way more potential and would be clearly the better QB with some starts under his belt. Not sure if the Bama game will allow him to force Mullen" s hand however as we might get pounded in the trenches in that game.

Is Richardson the next coming of Cam Newton? They sure do look the same playing the game in college. Anthony or Emory will be in the transfer portal next year. It's just which one?

I love corch Mullin. But coach Mullin's biggest weakness is loyalty to the people around him. 3rd and Grantham, and a guy who is just another 5 star guy who will never win an SEC crown. I do not dislike Jones, but he's not going to lead us to the promised land. This is not rocket science. Richardson may not either, but if Trask couldn't, then the problem is much deeper. Defensively much deeper.

Please don't bring up sCam Newtron's name, especially not in a comparison to any Gator QB in the present

or in the future.

And no, what Dan has told us, and what he reaffirmed in the post game, is that we have QB 1A and QB 1B and that both will continue to play. Stop asking for problems that don't exist except in some fans minds....

As to anyone transferring out goes,,,, Emory might consider it if Anthony took over and was absolutely lighting it up every week, but I doubt that Anthony goes anywhere but to graduation and eventually on to the NFL.

Can't wait to see your comments after this situation plays out.

Also there is a problem if the best option at QB isn't playing. Heck we just recently went through that scenario and saw the difference once things changed.

Fevered-brains, you're saying this to the ONLY guy on this board that advocated for 2-star Eagle Scout Kyle Trask from the day he committed to the Gators.

The same guy that was the strongest advocate for hiring Dan instead of Cow-Chip or Frost.

And the guy that said during their recruiting, that I wouldn't trade 4-star Richardson for 5-star Beck.....

The season will play out how it plays out, and I'll still be fine in Dec if both QB's are still playing in games, along with all 5 RB's in the rotation.

If Cam wasn't stealing a laptop, and committing academic fraud, and stuck around after Tebow left, he would have given Urban Meyer and The Gator Nation another National Championship. Who knows, Urban might have stuck around long enough to find a more competent OC than the Daz.

I gave you a like just for referring to @Gator Fever as Fevered Brains.

Doering said that the offense looked better under Richardson in the scrimmages to him. Said it looked like it had more rhythm.

Cam was the guy to bring us another NC, but Daz wasn't. Completely incompetent OC. Dan did what he needed to do for himself, but had he stuck around, we might have won three between 08-11.

I think Cam Newton made a likely 8-4 team undefeated. It seemed damn near every play besides a few runs by the RB was just Cam taking the snap and just running around deciding whether to throw or take off.

I wanna know where Jacob Copeland was last night?
#82 Weston - 3 for 44 yds, 14.7 yds/rec, L-36 (1st start)

#12 Wells - 5 for 36 yds, 7.2 yds/rec, L-13

#27 Pierce - 5 for 25 yds, 5.0 yds/rec, L-9

#14 Whittemore - 1 for 18 yds

#1 Copeland - 1 for 15 yds

#4 Shorter 4 for 11 yds, L-5

#6 Wright 1 for 4 yds

Richardson looked more relaxed, better command of the offense. We will see how week 2 plays out. I love that Jones has stuck around when 90% of kids would have transferred out. But at the end of the day, need to play who gives us the best chance to win.

Anyone know if that Covid 6 year rule stuff would allow a player to shut it down after 4 games this season and get a 2nd redshirt season?

If it does there is a possibility we could lose Jones after the Tenn game. Would be a real small timetable for him to do that if he chose to however.

Emory, how do you feel about your 1st start and win as the Gator QB?

"I don't feel that good about it, honestly," Jones said. "I've got to get back in the lab and play better. ... I missed too many throws that I never do."

~~ In one specific case, he threw behind #14 Whittemore twice, and too far ahead of him once, on simple routine crossing patterns.... wtf (his one 18 Yd catch was thrown by AR)

Richardson's passing suffered from the opposite difficulty, nobody open, dropped balls, and/or poor routes by the receivers, mostly by the backups and the newbees. He began 3/3 for 40 yds leading to a TD on his 1st drive in the 4th quarter. It would have been 4/4 with a passing TD if Henderson had made the catch in the endzone. But then he went 0/5 the rest of the way....

Note: Watch #14 making every one of his blocks on other plays. He shined even when the spotlight was not on him personally. @ grommit

The passing game for both QB's relies on their receivers and blockers, not just on themselves. I expect them all to settle down fairly quickly as the season progresses.

While the Gator fans continue to 'suffer a win' more than any other fan base....

It was sloppier than I even thought looking at the breakdown that guy on YouTube does on the plays. Luckily we get another game before Bama as some of the breakdowns would get us killed in a game like that.

NC #1 Bama will likely be a 2-3 TD favorite for the game, and deservedly so imo.

UGly will also likely be a 2-3 TD favorite, with LSU about an even up game.

I hope that the Gators progress and maybe get the nuttlickers again in Jax, but it won't ruin the season for me if they finish 10-2 or even 9-3.
The SEC (10 teams, 12, 14,,,, 16) is getting much tougher to win every year.
Hoeing that annual SEC row, just to get to a CFP game is much more difficult.

HS and College Sports is not ONLY about championships to me, and it never has been. Championships are just the icing on the season cake, not the cake itself.
While spoiled, demanding, drama-queen fans are like having flies in the icing....

If the leghumpers are 2 TD favorites over us then that will mean we have fell apart and lost to a team like KY. Hopefully that doesn't happen. Georgia has a real favorable schedule going forward but except for Bama ours is not too bad compared to what it is some years. LSU looks like it might not be a West contender and FSU is still pretty pedestrian I think.

For the clueless fevered brains of the world, how about a 2nd opinion on EJ/AR....

Nonsense. No reason to be running two guys except a very few snaps when they are both QBs that can run well. Richardson's upside is so much higher its not even funny unless it was to turn out he couldn't pass at all hardly.

Looked at Jones high school tape (was just mostly hitting wide open guys when not running) and his plays here and his passing appears to be as limited as Franks when it comes to the throws more than 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. I highly doubt Richardson could be a worse passer with some starts.

Fevered Brains to fill the QB coach position, so he can finally instruct clueless Dan on how to coach and utilize the QB position....

A. A coach doesn't replace a QB because the backup looked good on a couple of drives against an outmatched opponent.

B. The coach needs two QB's ready to play. If he moves the backup to the starting role, he risks the starter leaving the team and entering the transfer portal, then he is an injury away from having to play an unready guy.

C. Making such a move too quickly risks causing a split in the locker room. A divided locker room is a major problem.

See Insta, you could have responded to Fever with any of these reasoned, measured, and logical statements. But not you. You always go straight to dickhead mode. Actually, thinking about it, I'm not sure you have any mode that isn't dickhead.

But here's what I'd like you to try. Rather than just going straight to your default jackassery of "how dare anybody ever question our infallible Pope, I mean coach", try using that lump of crap three feet above your ass for something other than a hatrack.

Ole Fevered Brains would have got Franks out of there quickly and would be starting Richardson this game to give him more snaps ahead of the Bama game.

That would be a bad move. Too early to change starting QBs, especially after you won a game. How many teams are changing starting QBs after just the first week? It’s too early to make that move.

My guess is the change should have been made in camp in reality but I do see the point thinking about the team maybe. No telling how this plays out but I have a feeling Richardson will be a really big name in college football soon - either later this season or next season. I really hope he has some starts under his belt going into that Georgia game.

I'm hoping Emory will dramatically improve but if he continues to stink up the field like he did last week, he will be booed by the Gator faithful the same way Frank's was vs Mizzou and the same way Chris Leak was booed against Kentucky.

Mullen getting a little frustrated with the media. Also said on one of Richardson' s long runs he didn't do his reads/checkdowns properly prior to taking off. Maybe the real reason is not to put the starting pressure on Richardson in a game like this that could possibly get ugly.

gd3, Emory isn't 'STINKING up the field,' but the 2 Ints per game certainly needs to end. Other than the Int's, he's actually playing very well as the 'full game plan' starter.

Passing - 31 of 49 (63.3%) for 264 Yds, 8.5 Yds/Rec, 2 TD's, 4 Ints....

Rushing - 23 for 155 Yds, 6.7 YPC, 1 TD, L-33

I don’t think it is a good idea for ARs 1st start to be against Alabama and the #1 team in the country. I do agree he needs to play a lot but I wouldn’t start him.
Agreed.

However, I think a properly seasoned AR can win us a title next year, so I want to see him taking over the starting role in the not too distant future.
