First off let me say that I am NOT a Marine, I tried to join upon high school graduation but they would not take me due to my weight.
The recruiter literally told me, “go and lose 30 pounds then come back - because if we sent you to boot camp at your present weight they would effing kill you son” !
My son is a Lance Corporal in the USMC but I don’t live vicariously through him. I would’ve loved being a Marine but for me it wasn’t in the cards.
My father and brother were both Army and my uncle was Air Force so a record of serving is in my family. I probably could’ve done the Army thing but the uniform is ass - ain’t no uniform anywhere near the coolness and respectability of the USMC uniform.
As long as a Marine does their job without hesitation then it really doesn’t matter to me what side of the plate they eat from, and I think my son would feel the same way.
He doesn’t care if his brother in the foxhole with him sings the clarinet song, he only cares that his brother has his back and does his job bravely and honorably as he was trained to do.
But what does irk me about that tweet is the Marine Corp openly “recognizing“ and “honoring” the service of a specific demographic/individual only because they are of a specific sexual/identifying preference.
They shouldn’t be viewed as an alphabet soup Marine, they should be viewed as a United States Marine - period.
The only time a Marine should be recognized and honored is either through a promotion or going above and beyond. Those are real achievements …… declaring your sexual preference or what you “identify as” is not an achievement - it is a selfish declaration designed to single out yourself above all others.
