O line concerns?

Should there be any concern that Mizzou was the first team we've faced this year who were able to get to Grier by only bringing three lineman? Could the O line be regressing?

Or was there something young Grier wasn't doing that made the O line look more at fault than they may have been? Or maybe Mac didn't want to show Miles anything but vanilla?

Its still a weakness. The real good play calling has masked it a lot the past few games. LSU defense scares me with the athletes they have on defense that can cover one on one etc. I don't think Grier was the issue.

Missouri's defense has been the most talented and best coached that Florida faced since the Kentucky game! Florida was still able to run against it somewhat.

Well we've known since before the season that the o-line will be the weakest unit of our team this year. We should all be happy that this patchwork o-line has played this well to this point, and they're still getting better!

Played well last night IMO. They opened up big holes in the run game and Grier was clean most of the night. In the game thread I had mentioned that it seemed like our receivers were blanked. But after researching the game it seemed to me like Grier got confused by their zones a little bit. They zoned us up a lot and after a few near misses early I don't think he felt comfortable throwing in it. Once Mizzou saw he was hesitant they came after him a bit more. But even with that the line held up pretty well. Other than LSU it's probably the best d-line we'll face all year too so take that into consideration. For their first real hostile environment they played well.

This. Although I am not sure the LSU defense is any better than the Missouri defense

Hey Ooz, why do you think Grier holds on to the ball for so long instead of getting rid of it when there is no play to be made?

It's driving me crazy watching this kid get pummeled for no obvious reason other than him not throwing the ball out of bounds. Doesn't that have a negative impact on the psyche of the O line when they see their QB getting beat up?

I think that the lack of production was in several areas last night...some was the line play, some where dropped passes or unopen receivers at times, some of it was QB play...I think that it just shows that we are still really young on offense. Missou does have a great defense no doubt but we were also very inconsistent and had very few explosive plays yesterday. We will have to play better on offense if we are going to beat LSU. On top of that...our place kicking game is HORRIBLE....geez. However our defense is lights out, this team isn't turning the ball over very much, and we are playing a pretty clean game with fewer penalties. So there are some really good things going on too.

Not sure, but he's not doing himself any favors. Maybe Mac talking about him taking off to early against UK and UT is in his head? Now he seems to hold it painfully long and takes unnecessary hits as a result. Just young QB struggles I guess, he'll need to learn to find that balance.

I can tell you exactly where the OLine problem is at and if LSU and UGA catches on then we are in trouble. I've been watching them carefully since game 1. The weak link is at #78 David Sharpe. Watch the games again if you have a DVR and you will notice the same thing, he has a lot of work ahead of him. He has to pass protect better. He was in fact one if not the biggest reason why they were getting to Grier last night. Also watch the previous games and you will notice things about Sharpe, if he is the best UF has over what is left on the sideline then we might be in trouble come the next 2 games. But Sharpe will get better and will be good next year. I understand its his first year and I'm not downing him because of this but he has a lot of work to do to understand this game better and how those DEs and DTs are going to beat him. He has to picture in his head each single play on what he thinks they are going to do and how they are going to come in on pass protection and speed blocking.

I disagree. What quarterback chooses to hold the ball and take a beating instead of passing to an open receiver? Doesn't add up...ijs
He stood back there forever....go back and watch. Everytime they dropped 8 Grier held onto the ball for 5+ seconds. Eventually even 3 men are going to get there. Not the O-line fault on that. Credit Mizzou, they confused us with the 8 drop.

Sharpe was a true freshmen last year. He played but he didn't play a lot by any means.

There is no doubt that Grier holds the ball too long and has taken plenty of bad sacks...but just like the O Line it's going to take some time for these guys to get it right and play at a high level consistently. It is what it is...and it's been a real credit to the players that we are still undefeated with with our offensive struggles. Defense has really stepped up and done a good job.

i guess I'm really confused. Are people surprised that we have some oline concerns? Hasn't that been the biggest concern for this team as soon as last year finished?

My take on the oline is it is concern and it's going to be a concern for a little bit longer but it has exceeded my expectations and we have an excellent oline coach.

I agree...hell I think that the line has done a great job considering everything around it. However they will need to play better in the next two games to win IMO...as will Grier but I think that these guys have exceeded expectation in a BIG way. Very impressed with their talents and ability to learn/execute in a short amount of time.

At the end of the day we are undefeated and this team is getting it done. Excited about this top 10 match up...we have a real opportunity to upset another team. Go Gators!

Well, when you're rushing 3 and dropping 8 it's hard for a receiver to get open, and Grier was not comfortable throwing into some of the zone coverages Mizzou gave us. Yes, he needs to get rid of the ball, but at least he didn't throw into coverage (well, he did a couple of times) and throw interceptions. What was important in this game was that we didn't turn the ball over and we let our defense do their work.

A rsFr, with a new coaching staff and offense, against a Top rated SoS, with a 'weak-link' OL.

Grier - 106 of 161, 65.8% for 1,204 yards, 10 TD's to 3 Ints, L 77 yds, 201 yds/gm.

All things considered, I think that Grier, along with the rest of this young/inexperience offense,
are doing a FANTASTIC JOB and playing as a TEAM so far. o_O

It happens in every level of football. Even the NFL.

Most of the time it is because the defense will rush 4 and cover with 7. With only a select number of receivers against 7 guys they have trouble finding a guy open. It is called a coverage sack. It happens all of the time at all levels.
