In the 1940s, the country came together like never before to defeat the Axis powers. Everyone was united in the effort to win World War II, whether it was those who served, or those who were still in the US supporting those that did.
We were truly the UNITED STATES. We had come together around the idea of Law and Order, and we had won WWII as a result.
We were the world's dominant superpower. In every way.
The country was completely unified around the idea of Law and Order. We carried that over into the 1950s, and the country boomed in the 50s.
Starting in the 1960s, we began to see a shift. The reason why is up for debate. Maybe there truly was a plan to destabilize the US as the world's lone superpower. Or maybe some of us just got complacent after years of enormous prosperity.
For whatever reason, we split and became a country where the vast majority of us still believed in Law and Order, but a small minority began to believe that The End Justifies the Means. Over time, the rules began to be enforced unequally. This increased over time, then rules began to be WRITTEN to benefit groups unequally.
I think that's why first Reagan and then Trump were so insanely popular, because both Presidents were and are throwbacks to the Law and Order era where America enjoyed its greatest growth, prosperity, and the 50s, the last time when the country was truly united. Where all Americans shared the same values.
Now, we've reached a point where one party and its voters are perfectly fine with their candidate winning by cheating. Because 'The End Justifies the Means'.
The only way this country can truly be United again is if we hold the same values, as we last did in the 50s.
I don't think there is any easy way to do that. I do know this, if this country becomes United around the idea that The End Justifies the Means, we will indeed become one of those shithole countries where everyone is corrupt and everyone is a criminal.
I think Law and Order will again win out. Let's pray it does.
