Great Hoops Win...

The question is:
Do you believe white is the guy (long term)?
He’s got a great class coming in next year...I tend to believe he’ll get it turned around, but Fred Hoiberg is floating out there without a job........

I think White is the guy for us. Allen and Hudson are killing us, and most of it is mental. Every season Allen shows up against Arkansas (his home state so he plays with an intensity lacking in other games) and against like every 5th opponent but the rest of the season he is an unassertive mute. Hudson just plain lost his mojo and seems mentally unable to regain it. Hudson is too assertive and misses too much. Allen is opposite, too unassertive and because he actually makes it a lot when he is assertive, we lose out on those makes that he doesn't take due to unassertiveness.

Basically, we need Allen and Hudson to flip with each other. Allen to be selfish on offense and drive and shoot more and Hudson to not do that and play within the flow of his teammates and perhaps that will relax him a bit and his shot will reflect that.

Hayes, look we all like his hustle and effort but he kills us with his uncoordinated, fumbling hands that costs us a few turnovers a game down low under the basket. He gets stripped of the ball in the paint more than anyone.

I'm liking the passion out of the freshmen and add to that next year's freshmen and we looking good for the future, especially since all these guys can be 3-4 year guys for us that will make us really good when they are upperclassmen.

To get back to why I believe in White, our defense is nasty and hardworking. You can't buy defense. Offense comes and goes, you either got natural scorers or you don't and even with natural scorers, they can be either on or off depending how streaky they are. Defense is more the nurture vs Offense being more the nature. The coach can nurture a defense more so than he can an offense. Defense comes down to hard work, practice, intensity, and buying in to the coach. Offense is all that too, but at the end of the day on offense you either got mentally strong killer instinct scorers or you don't, regardless of the effort.

I'd be more worried if our offense was up tempo high flying but our defense was trash because like I said offense comes and goes, defense can't be bought, if you don't got it you're going to be trash every game.

Our defense wasn't there early this season, but has greatly improved since then due to players buying into White. Now White has been tinkering on the offense with lineup changes and verbal motivations so like a chemist he is in the workshop trying to get the right combination of elements to produce offensive chemistry.

Look at our losses. Only one blowout to FSU and that was first game before we had buy in on the defensive side of the ball, which improved greatly since then. FSU is a great ranked squad making noise. Michigan St and Oklahoma are good teams that are ranked high every year under veteran, successful coaches.....we were in those games and had chance to win and lost by 4 and 5 points. No, Butler and South Carolina aren't ranked squads like the other 3 losses above but they were close games that we could have won (Butler) and should have won (USC). We avenged the Butler loss by giving them their worst defeat in years winning by what like 35 points or so in the rematch? We can do that to USC too.

The SEC slate is tough in recent years and we will have to work hard to make NCAA tourney and I will be pissed like the rest of you if we don't make it. But, it's not like the team is in such disrepair that we get clearly outmanned and beat down in our losses (again, aside from game 1 vs FSU, which was before we upped the defensive focus). We are in every game, even against top ranked programs. Just gotta turn that offensive molasses into free flowing honey and we'll be really good. Get Allen's and Hudson's heads switched!

There may be a big turnaround later or next season but it drives me crazy when we play this way with the slowdown ball because we usually lose with White calling it that way against the better teams. Its almost like Arkansas decided they would just out ugly us with even worse shooting although we let them back in it late in the game.

I agree with a lot of this and White’s teams have pretty consistently played really good defense. And he looks to have started recruiting pretty well, starting with this years class although if you look at the current roster it’s been pretty shaky prior. The thing that I don’t like is the apparent complete lack of any kind of plan on offense. Like what is he trying to get accomplished? I thought he was a push the pace guy coming in but I don’t see that at all. And they are good defensively and with rebounding so there should be opportunities to run. And your half court offense is godawful, so I’m not sure how you’re planning on putting the ball in the basket.

But his results have been good enough that he shouldn’t be on any kind of hot seat.

I didn't watch the game because I've grown weary of seeing the pitiful offense we run. Reading about it this morning, I was glad to see that Allen and Hudson played better. But the shooting stats were atrocious and it looks like we had another late game collapse. A win is a win, especially on the road, but I just can't get into this year's team like I have in the past. Always pulling for any Gator team and I'll probably catch more games down the road, but definitely will be watching the NFL playoff game Saturday instead of the Tennessee/UF game.

Good win but yet another 2nd half collapse. It’s a reoccurring theme that I have a problem with.

We were really bad last night. Arkansas was just that much worse. It was an ugly basketball game.

It was ugly. First half looked like my Tuesday games at the Salvation Army with shots clanging everywhere. But Gators defense gets some credit for that. Arkansas has been good and that's a good win on the road. It probably is about equal to how bad the USC loss at home was.

Yeah, I thought he was a high flying, athletic players, run the floor, fastbreak kind of guy too, considering that's what he did at LaTech. It's like his friendship with Frank Martin has rubbed off on him and ever since we lost to Martin in the elite 8, White has decided that we need to switch to that defensive slow ball approach to succeed in a tougher SEC.......lol, definitely parallels with Muschamp here. Perhaps White is overthinking the offense and that is imprinting on some players causing them to overthink on offense on the court?

No lead is safe with our offense. Blew a 14 point lead Saturday and a 16 point lead with under 8 to play last night. Defense is fantastic, but we've got to get better on the offensive end. I still say we are NIT bound, but the great news with an awesome defense you tend to be in every game.

I'm still amazed that with White's offense, his team won 27 games and went to the Elite-8 in just his 2nd season as a Gator. After consecutive trips to the Big Dance, it's obvious that it's White's poor coaching and offensive game plan that has them starting slow this season...

When the Jimmy's & Joe's are missing WIDE-OPEN shots, it's not the offense or the coach... o_O

Mike White is the Gator's coach, now and well into the future, so get used to it...
