The news has also been confirmed by Noles247 reporter Josh Newberg as well.

"Got direct confirmation that former FSU OL coach Greg Frey has accepted an offer to join the Gators staff in an off field role as an analyst," Newberg tweeted. "Big get. A proven coach and recruiter coming over from a rival with something to prove."

Anyone know how involved an "off-the-field" coach (Analyst) can be in recruiting ?

Film room work - is he any good ? Phone calls ? Talk to them if they make a campus visit ?

Would not think that he could make at school or in home visits.

Obviously, UF is trying to match Bama / UGA in off the field support staff.

He’s being added as a support staff member. We also don’t have to pay him as FSU is still paying him for us.

We are just trying to catch up to Clemson and Bama and others as the amount of support staffers they have on their staff. I believe we have more hires coming.

It’s a good hire of a guy that has a lot of connections in Florida. We have Hevesy that can coach and develop olineman. Frey can help in other areas.

FWIW FSUs oline has sucked for years. Briles accepted the FSU OC position under one condition that he could bring his own oline coach. Problem is he brought the oline coach from Houston that doesn’t have much of a resume.

It was a big move/get by Mullen. He doesn’t even have to pay for the guy.

Hes garb. I would not want him anywhere near the program....and hes an fsu grad..

But hey #'s, now that he's escaped from tallycrappy, that awful stink should wear off him fairly quickly. ;) I'll try not to hold his FSU Alum status against him for now, since he only coached their OL for 1 year and he had inherited crap there...

FSU hired him from Mich. where he was the OT/TE's coach and run game coordinator. Before that, while in Morgantown, he coached an OL led by Walter Camp All-American Ryan Stanchek and All-Big East 1st team performer Greg Isdaner. Frey also helped launch USF's football program, serving as a graduate assistant in the team's 1st years of existence (1996-98).

He also won the 93 FSU national title as a player.... That championship style will be strutting the campus. I agree he was given a bad hand here. I actually thought he was a good hire when he got here. Hope he lands on his ft and does well for you guys.

Jusdamn #'s,,, there you go being reasonable again...

He get's limited use his 1st year, and if he works out, then they will likely make it permanent.
We'll all just have to wait and see what develops. ;)

A tyally, I always liked Frey and hope he does well enough to get another job somewhere. He was a very good later for us and I thought was a good hire when we got him last year. Heard some chatter for Mich fans who said they were happy he was leaving, but figured that was mostly sour grapes.
with the layers we had last year, nobody was going to do much. Part of that was recruiting misses, art injury, and a big part was a number of guys left when Jimbo bolted (a few transfers, a couple upper classes who have up football with a year or two of eligibility left.
I don't want him to do TOO good for you, but hope he helps out enough that someone else hires him.

Part of that was recruiting misses...

For as long as sadgator has been following college football, FSU has been recruiting “misses”...
