Fetterman actually won fairly easily as I recall. No drama. The race was called within 2-3 hours of the polls closing.

They voted tactically, knowing that control of the Senate was in play and that both candidates would mostly vote with their party.
And while I prefer my senators to be of sound mind, it’s not an executive role like the POTUS or a governor, where they actually have to get things done.
Your second sentence seems to contradict the claim made in the first. If nothing gets done in the Senate, then voters wouldn't care which party controlled it.
