Illinois prosecutors rejected charging five suspects in a deadly gang-related shootout that unfolded in Chicago, despite police reportedly seeking to charge all five suspects with murder and aggravated battery.

The shootout took place in the Austin community of Chicago Friday morning, and was reportedly sparked by an internal dispute between two factions of the Four Corner Hustlers gang, the Chicago Sun Times reported, citing an internal police report and a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation.

"Mutual combatants was cited as the reason for the rejection," a police report reviewed by the Chicago Sun Times said of the state attorney’s office’s decision. The report also noted that the suspects weren’t cooperating with investigators.

Imagine being a cop in a city with prosecutors who think that way. Why in the hell would you waste your time and likely put yourself into harms way to prove X killed Y???

Even if you build a case, prosecutors like this will try to destroy it. Chicago is dead.

You are not unless Y was unarmed and not a felon.

In these cases how do you know if Y didnt shoot first and X killed in self defense.

Unless Y is an innocent bystander, these guys are permanently removing a criminal from the streets one at a time.

The key is containment. If one can accelerate this, without too many innocents harmed, at a rate faster than replacement then these guys burn themselves out.

If X is a felon then charge him for having a gun.

Wasn’t this a George Carlin bit? He described setting up a zone where violent criminals can murder each other with impunity. Then step back and let nature take its course. Then cops don’t have to risk their lives keeping Phil Leotardo from wacking Stringer Bell.

Carlin wasn't the only one with that dream. As a kid in the 60's, I always wanted the KKK and the Black Panthers to meet out in a remote desert and fight it out, hopefully to end in mutual extinction, away from those that were still maintaining at least a loose grip on their sanity.... 😉

I think that really does occur to this day in cities like Chicago. It's certainly not a policy but when resources are stretched thin and they have to pick and choose which cases get worked...

Yep. But it brings on a huge problem.
Unless you let armed honest citizens open up their local streets as a skeet range. 😉

And there are obviously 2 kinds of policy.
1. Those written down that everyone is expected to follow.
2. What actually happens out on the street, but is only quietly talked about over a beer at the local watering hole after your shift is over.
