Anyone watching football yesterday can be sure that a QB makes all the difference...obviously.
UGA particularly is concerning because Smart is taking his lumps with Eason this year, but he will have a can full of whoop ass for opponents next year with that kid. You can't coach what he can do and you can't teach it. The kid has a rifle and is not afraid to use it. He's also very accurate and keeps his poise even when the chips are down. Next year, he's going to be very difficult to defend!
Last night, for the first time, I thought that it is time to go with Trask or Franks.
First, if Mac doesn't use them now he may never get to at this rate. We will lose to LSU and Arky with this team and neither will be close most likely. We could easily lose to Georgia, Missouri and FSU. That puts us at 4 to 6 losses this year, depending how it shakes out.
Second, next year Mac loses his entire D worth talking about and all he will be left with is the strategy of trying to outscore opponents. That is never going to happen with LDR AND the O line as it now exists, which won't be much more talented next year.
Finally, after flaming out the rest of this year and next, Mac will almost certainly be let go, never having the chance to use his young QBs.
Trask and Franks have what Eason have in terms of physical stature and the ability to throw the ball. We need to get one or both of those guys playing time right now because we are going to have to battle Eason, along with others, the next 2 to 3 years, without a Muschamp defense. We must have talent of our own to offset this.
This offense is not scaring anyone with our QBs now, particularly among the elite of our conference. Outside of Callaway there's barely anyone to even mention by name if you're the opposing team's D coordinator.
Even if LDR can play next week, he's so hobbled that it won't take them long to either jump his passes or hurt him worse. Appleby can't beat LSU either, IMO.
So, the choice should be clear to Mac...better make your stand now because this offense only works if you have a QB that can make quick decisions and has a rifle arm to compensate for the OL deficiencies. By the time Mac can compensate by recruiting and coaching better linemen, the ship and support from Gator Nation will have long sailed.
I know this might not be an easy or popular decision, but we are going to be further behind if we don't develop the small pieces of elite talent we already have.
