Diesel is what fuels the brown trucks. This is going to be a nightmare for the Christmas holiday delivery season. Hello Mega surcharges on shipping.......and lettuce is gonna be 10 bucks a head. Thanks Mr Potato Head!Gasoline prices get the majority of the press coverage when it comes to energy and it’s impact on the economy. However diesel is literally what fuels the trucking, construction, and farming industries in this country. Included in this demand segment is jet fuel.
This is where the lack of refining capacity is really coming back to bite us. A number of refineries (predominantly west of the Rocky Mountains) have shut down and are in the process of converting to Renewable Diesel production.
This is the process of converting soybean oil, animal fats etc into fungible diesel to comply with the EPA Renewable Fuels Standards and the California Liw Carbon Fuels Standards. The problem is that renewable diesel is not nearly as efficient as regular petroleum refining. These programs create perverse economic incentives in the name of “climate change” and “energy independence” to drive up the cost of fuel.
The 330,000 bpd refinery outside Philadelphia had a catastrophic incident back in 2019 and has not and will not restart operation.
This problem wasn’t created overnight and it won’t be solved overnight.
